Saturday, 7th February 2009 was one of the darkest days to dawn upon the whole of Australia. But mostly towards the people of Victoria, it is now known as Black Saturday. Black Saturday was a series of bushfires that ignited or were burning across Victoria during extreme bushfire-weather conditions, resulting in Australia 's highest ever loss of life from a bushfire.…
The alarming Black Saturday bushfires commenced on February 7th 2009, igniting in Victoria, Australia. The fires affected more than 78 communities resulting 173 deaths, over 400 injuries, 2,100 homes destroyed and over 7,500 people displaced. The fire was an event due to extreme hot weather conditions. Wildfires are natural events that occur frequently in Australia, but the ongoing drought and warm winds resulted temperatures to each 46 Celsius degrees with winds in excess of more than 100km per hour, that caused burning embers to initiate the main fire.…
Today I told the girls that we would do something different tomorrow. A very special practice that is unknown to the people of this village. We will preform a voodoo ritual . We will meet in the woods and get started right away. Hopefully they gathered all the items and have not forgotten what I have showed them.…
If you are already tired of the conventional characters you see each year at Halloween parties, you can always think of something that is not normally seen. Or if you plainly want to break the ice at the party you are going to attend, you can try wearing funny costumes that would leave everyone laughing out loud when they see you. It might take a lot of courage to execute funny Halloween costume ideas, but it will be rewarding in the end.…
The Wounded Knee Massacre came after a battle between the United States and the Sioux. The Sioux had won the battle and clearly the United States were not happy. The Wounded Knee Massacre started with soldiers from the United States that were sent to this tribe to arrest the leaders because the Indians had different beliefs. They started with a man named Sitting Bull who was killed in the process. The United States were sent back and a man named bigfoot was in charge now. A fight between a soldier and an Indian broke out and a shot was fired from an Unknown side. The Indians could have done something to try to prevent this but the United States soldiers and government were the ones that started this because they attacked…
This is the first time I was in American and also I lived alone. Due to that, lacking of caring from parents is obvious. Fortunately, I met and stayed in your family at Christmas Break. Thanks to your family’s niceness, I am not homesick anymore. Christmas and New Year are the best time to gather all member in your family together, so thank you for sharing that most wonderful time to me. Although New Year Day in United States was passed, Lunar New Year in Vietnam is coming. Moreover, Lunar New Year is the most perfect time to say “thank you”. I believe 2016 will bring you the warmth of love and fulfill all your wishes.…
By the 1920s and 1930s, Halloween had become a secular, but community-centered holiday, with parades and town-wide parties as the featured entertainment. Despite the best efforts of many schools and communities, vandalism began to plague Halloween celebrations in many communities during this time. By the 1950s, town leaders had successfully limited vandalism and Halloween had evolved into a holiday directed mainly at the young. Due to the high numbers of young children during the fifties baby boom, parties moved from town civic centers into the classroom or home, where they could be more easily accommodated. Between 1920 and 1950, the centuries-old practice of trick-or-treating was also revived. Trick-or-treating was a relatively inexpensive way for an entire community to share the Halloween celebration. In theory, families could also prevent tricks being played on them by providing the neighborhood children with small treats. A new American tradition was born, and it has continued to grow. Today, Americans spend an estimated $6 billion annually on Halloween, making it the country’s second largest commercial…
In its modernity, Halloween is the only day out of the entire year where a person is encouraged to be someone wildly different from themselves, with (almost) no negative repercussions. Thus, people tend to outdo themselves when it comes to crafting their "persona" for the night, taking much of their inspiration from movies, video games, the news, and even Internet memes to build the greatest costumes.…
The culture of the United States of America is essentially Western, yet is affected by African, Native American, Asian, Polynesian, and Latin American societies. A strand of what might be portrayed as American society began its development once again 10,000 years back with the movement of Paleo-Indians from Asia, Oceania, and Europe, into the district that is today the mainland United States. The United States of America has its own particular one of a kind social and social attributes, for example, tongue, social propensities, music, expressions, legends and food. The United States of America is an ethnically and racially various nation as an aftereffect of vast scale relocation…
If one were to mention the concept of witchcraft, certain notions would instantaneously come to mind. For some, witchcraft stirs ideas of grotesque old crones draped in ill-fitting garments riding a broom across the heavens; oftentimes, these figures are represented with a common black cat to serve as their familiar. Likewise, others may think of witchcraft in terms of Hollywood blockbuster films such as The Wizard of Oz or perhaps even The Witches of Eastwick. As fanciful and alluring as these interpretations of witchcraft may be, they are at best a poor parody for the historical realities of the fear inspired by witches and the cruelties that this fear unleashed, particularly in Colonial British America during the 17th and 18th centuries.…
I do not feel there are good enough words in the English language to describe the unspeakable practice of lynching in America. The time period (mostly between 1880 and 1940) where lynching of African Americans took place was one of the darkest and most sinister times in American history. Thousands upon thousands of innocent people were murdered and disgustingly toyed with at the hands of Whites for no reason other than sick, twisted amusement and to keep the belief of White Supremacy alive. When I looked at those photos in both the article titled “Lynching in America, Confronting the Legacy of Racial Terror” and the video, “Without Sanctuary”, I felt like I was viewing what could only be described as a nightmare. Many of their bodies were…
¡§The chaos of death disturbs the peace of the living. This unsettling fact of life has proven to be a rich source of inspiration for human efforts to find order in disorder, meaning in suffering, eternity in finitude. Religion, culture, social structures, the vitality of these rudimentary elements of communal life depends upon ritually putting the dead body in its place, managing the relations between the living and the dead and providing explanations for the existence of death.¡¨…
The first theme that I think is apparent is the search for a better life. Conditions in the rural Philippines are hard for the peasants. There is hardship and exploitation. The peasant children have no childhood because they are working in the fields or in the market or home with the parents at an early age. The boys leave their parents' home in their early teens to find work and a better life, trying to escape the harsh and hopeless environment. Their families know and expect this. Carlos' mother tells him several times that he can go and that they are poor. They go from menial job to menial job trying to make out a living. The parents can't give them a better life in a farming environment and the parents and children know this.…
The world is filled with several different cultures with their unknown beliefs. Culture can be defined as complex system of values, traits, moral and customs shared by a society. Another word that shapes culture is its rituals, which is formed by different countries. Rituals are associated with religious observation and beliefs. Culture can be viewed as a different prospective. Many anthropologists found discoveries of many rituals among humans and animals that are being practiced today in the world. They believe that these rituals have the power to bind or tear people from their culture. Victor Turner is a famous anthropologist who made many contributions to culture religion and its rituals.…
Most people are in shock when I tell them, I have never went trick or treating. If you ask a person in Iran “How did you spend your last Halloween, they wouldn’t have a clue what you’re talking about “. Spending the majority of my life in Iran, I had no knowledge of this tradition. Until I was approached by one of my good friends, asking me to go trick or treating with them. After getting my elaborate costume ready, I met up with her, Olivia, And Suarez. Slowly we made our way to our first stop, a two story house overflowing with Halloween decorations and spirit. After a few knocks, the door slowly creped open and an elderly man stepped out in a miners outfit and greeted us with a handful of candy. After we stored the candy in our bags we left for our next target of our candy gathering campaign. House by house we kept going on and on slowly filling up our bags. Hours later we arrived at the last stop for the night, a single story old fashioned house that looked as if it had better days. No door bell was found on the doorsteps so we just knocked on the wooden door. There was a small light in the mirror so we waited for a bit more. In the middle of me and my friends talking the door slowly opened and a little kid walked out dressed fallowed by her mother dressed as the witch. She poured us a bowl of candy as how she explained that no one trick or treats at her house because it appears haunted, and how we were blessed with a rare breed of brave. After That stop our bags couldn’t hold any more candy so we decided it’s best to go back to my friend’s house to eat our candy and exchange them for our desired candy. We crawled onto the coach right as a replay of black and white Frankish tine movie was being broadcasted on the television. The next day I woke up at around 6 o clock in the afternoon because I didn’t get any sleep on the night before Halloween either. Looking back at it now I realize it was a great risk to visit the abandoned…
