Anderson and Graff have an argument about setting battle room scenarios unfair or not. Ender is placed in the Rat Army. The commander, Rose De Nose, immediately hates Ender and warns Ender to stop practicing with the Launchies. Ender sees Dink, (Ender is assigned to Dink’’s platoon) as a kind soul, but is suspicious sometimes because of Dink’s actions. Ender and Dink talk one day and Ender finds out that Dink was promoted twice, but refused to be commander because he didn’t believe in school. Dink says the real enemy is the teacher, not the students. Dink doesn’t want the adults to ruin his childhood and life. Dink tells Ender that he thinks the Buggers have vanished and the school is running to keep the I.F. in charge. Ender doesn’t believe…
As stated in Lee Bollinger's article, "admissions policies do not meaningfully affect a white student's chances of admission" so there is no actual proof that affirmative action is reverse discrimination against whites. Also affirmative action does not demean individual accomplishment, but enhances it because according to Nell Irvin Painter "without affirmative action, it never would have occurred to any large, white research university to consider [her] for professional employment." So if anything, affirmative action helps individuals have more successful lives by providing people with better opportunities than they would otherwise have. I think that Lee Bollinger's argument is the strongest, since he provides concrete evidence and actual…
I believe Stephen Feldman’s argument is very accurate. I think his arguments are eye opening, especially his arguments about religious holidays. Around Thanksgiving time there are a lot of Christmas decorations. For individuals in outgroups it would be difficult living in a world of cultural imperialism where everyone assumes you practice the same religion as them. I also agree with the author’s main argument, the separation of church and state does not equally protect all American’s religious freedoms. I realized this when the author mentioned the case of Thornton v. Caldor Inc. the main argument in the case was to allow employees to not work on their religious Sabbath, which ever day that might be. The Supreme Court approved the Christian…
Winston’s argument is that the Party would fail with the power the possess. He states that the older generations would use the previous Newspeak than the new generation and they might be influenced to use the previous language. People can rebel against the Party like how he and Julia did. Even if the proles become cautious of what’s happening then they can overthrow the Party. As long as people remember, you can’t control them at all. A civilization based on hate and fear would never endure. For example, the German Nazi’s had so much power and influence during World War II. Eventually, their power fell and the Allies won the War. No matter what happens, so much power would fall…
As document C states, “No one will employ me; white boys won’t work with me. No one will have me in his office, white clerks won’t associate with me.” Even though blacks were provided with a chance of education, it never came in handy in the future when looking for a job. Pursuant to document D, “ The African Congregational Church in New Haven offered a literary club, ran a Sunday school, published a newspaper, hosted abolitionist meetings, and provided a refuge for slaves. The blacks were given a vast amount of political rights, but they were still excluded from the whites. For example, a separate church for blacks may have been a great place for blacks to perform and attend events. However, they still felt excluded and restricted because there were only certain places they could go.…
….there is a document that has been discussed among African Americans since before my time. This document was entitled the Willie Lynch Letter and the making of a slave, published by Lushena Books. The letter was in fact a speech reportedly delivered by a white slave owner from the West Indies, William Lynch, on the bank of the James River in 1712, where he announced: I am here to help you solve some of your problems with slaves. You are losing valuable stock by hangings, you are having uprisings, slaves are running away, your crops are sometimes left in the field for maximum profit, you suffer occasional fires and your animals are killed. I have a…
In reality, people are able to be ethically responsible instantaneously at hand through their capability in doing so. People act ethically responsible when one is in need of assistance because their they let their sympathetic feelings of compassion take over their intentions. Ethical responsibility is a duty or obligation to ensure the individual’s well-being through specific commitments such as saving someone from tragedy. One piece of text that revolves around people having the capacity in demonstrating sudden acts of ethical responsibility is “Can the Law Make Us Be Decent” by Jay Sterling Silver. Though many may argue that Silver’s argument is invalid, most will agree that his argument is in fact agreeable because the emotions of one…
This article describes the horrible life of workers while making no distinction between any race, although on the surface this doesn’t appear to mean much this actually was a leap for African Americans. The white workers received no special treatment from the factory owner, at that stage it is a social class issue not a racial issue. The second reason industrialization is proven beneficial to racial equality is back in Slavery by Another Name, even as southerners oppressed blacks, many African Americans fled north. Northern states had already industrialized at this time which means, in a literal sense, blacks flee from the unindustrialized south to the industrialized north, proving that at the time they recognized that industrialization would offer a better life for…
Along with religion Walker believed that ignorance was one of the main contributions to the “wretchedness” of the blacks. In this article Walker addresses the ignorance white men and other cultures have toward slavery and the black people on general. Walker also states that the ignorance of political leaders such as Thomas Jefferson has greatly…
I am offering this essay since I believe that the African-Americans have been done a great disservice by the Nation. As a people they were forcibly brought to this land, they were enslaved in an illegal and immoral system, and then they were abandoned by that same Nation ostensibly after having their freedom returned. What happened to them was not fair and there is a debt due to them. I hope to show in this paper some of the offenses that I find glaring.…
Africans Americans faced many problems after being set free after the Emancipation Proclamation. They were freed men according to the law, but were they really free? They still faced the same racism and prosecution that they had before when they were slaves. They were still treated badly by the white man, as a second class. A black man couldn’t go to the same schools, ride on the same buses, or even drink out of the same drinking fountain as a white man. There were many double standards throughout society.4…
In Appeal, Walker attacks Jefferson and states, “Mr. Jefferson declared to the world, that we are inferior to the whites…It is indeed surprising, that a man of such great learning, combined with such excellent natural parts, should speak so of a set of men in chains. I do not know what to compare it to, unless, like putting one wild deer in an iron cage, where it will be secured, and hold another by the side of the same, then let it go, and expect the one in the cage to run as fast as the one at liberty”. Walker completely rejects Jefferson’s colonization theory along with his racism towards blacks. The concept of colonization angered Walker as he stated,” America is more our country, than it is the whites-we have enriched it with our blood and tears. The greatest riches in all America have arisen from our blood and tears”. During that time all of America demanded slavery for production and it was slavery that built America’s economy therefore Walker believed slaves have every right to be a part of this country. In this pamphlet, Walker challenges Jefferson’s idea of colonization and…
Of all the groups, African-Americans, had the most treacherous economic ladder to climb. Immediately following the Civil War they had the freedoms necessary to obtain economic success. They were ready to take advantage of their newly found rights as Americans after the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment. Many African-Americans began to find jobs away from the plantations or even re-negotiate deals with their previous masters. The photograph, “Hampton Institute, 1900”, depicted a painting of blacks working on a stair case. This is a metaphor to the way the ex-slaves had to start at the bottom and work their way up. They were complacent with this because they thought if they worked hard, it would be possible for them to seize the “American Dream”. By the turn of the decade, hundreds were elected to office, including two state-lieutenant governors and fifteen into the House of Representatives.…
When African Americans arrived they didn’t get the better working conditions or jobs they hoped. When African Americans came north into cities they did not get the best jobs, but they at least found better jobs than they had in the south. “Many new arrivals found jobs in factories, slaughterhouses and foundries, where working conditions were arduous and sometimes dangerous.” (History) The white northern people didn’t like all the extra competition that the African Americas were causing when they moved north. The large movement of black to the north from the south was called The Great Migration. During the great migration, six million blacks decided that they were going to move north for a chance at a better life. The main reason for moving north were, to get away from racism that was worsened with implementation of Jim Crow laws and lack of jobs were pretty sever push factors that made the African Americans move north. Jim Crow Laws are laws that separated Black and Whites in bathrooms, restaurants and even separated water fountains. The law was supposed to keep things separate but equal between the races, but that didn’t happen. The government didn’t know that the law was being used to mistreat blacks, as far as the government knew thing were separate but equal for black and…
When Jim crow laws were established, blacks were prohibited from selling products to Whites. This prevented black people from making profit, which automatically put them at a disadvantage due to low income. While the white community was getting all sorts of benefits such as homes, education, and loans, the African American community was hurting due to discrimination and racism. They were unable to escape poverty and were forced to work hazardous job for a very low pay. Although Jim crow laws were abolished, we still witness the long-term effects of segregation today. If we compare a white family to a black family today who work the same hours with same employment, there will be a significant difference in earnings. Due to these differences, African Americans are most likely to struggle with adequate access to health care, safe, sanitary, and decent housing, and educational attainment. These disadvantages sets people of color up for failure such as pregnancy at a young age, use of drugs, and leaving school in order to make a living to meet their needs. As the film states, it is only after we accept that racism does exist as well as white privileges, that we can…
