Hamlet Act 4 Summary
ACT 4

Scene 1 After being Harassed by her son Claudius tells Gertrude to explain what happened and she tells Claudius of how Hamlet killed Polonius by mistake and thought it was Claudius instead of Polonius. After hearing the story King of Denmark Claudius realises that he could have easily been killed if it were him instead of Claudius. Then asks the Whereabouts of Polonius corpse and Gertrude knew not where Hamlet had taken it just that he dragged it away. So the king demands the Hamlets old school friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to seek out Hamlet and find out where he put the body.
Scene 2 Rosencrantz and Guildenstern find Hamlet and ask him what he did with Polonius dead body. Hamlet gets a little bit suspicious about why they …show more content…
1 that his mother loves him to much, and 2 that the general public are supporters of Hamlet. After the talking they get a letter from Hamlet learning of his return. They have no idea what to do about the situation seeing how King Claudius´s first plan didnt turn out so good. They cant quite figure out how to kill Hamlet without upsetting the people. They fight and then Hamlet grabs the poison blade and wounds Laertes with it. Then his mother falls and they realise that she has drank from the poison cup. Hamlet is furious when Laertes confesses that the blade and the drink is poisoned and takes the poisoned blade and stabs King Claudius with the rappier, then forces the king to drink from the poisoned drink. After all the series of events Hamlet is left there slowly dying and mutters out his last words that Fortinbras should be king of Denmark. Then Fortinbras Storms the castle back from his conquest in poland and becomes king and demands that Hamlet be given a proper

    The deaths in which Hamlet played a part or had knowledge of helped him realize suicide was not the easy way to go. Hamlet stabbed Polonius through a curtain while he was arguing with his mother. Hamlet sends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern with a letter to the King of England, stating that whomever is holding this letter is to be executed, both Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are beheaded. Claudius and Laertes was planning to kill Hamlet in a duel with rapiers. Laertes rapier had poison on the tip of the sword. Hamlet killed Laertes in the duel. Laertes dropped his sword in a scuffle with Hamlet. Hamlet picked up the sword and stabbed Laertes with his own poisonous sword. Laertes told Hamlet that the sword was poisonous and that Claudius planned on killing him with poisonous wine. Laertes had already stabbed Hamlet with the sword giving Hamlet a short amount of time left to live. Gertrude got ahold of the poisonous wine and drank it, killing her. Claudius tried to stop her but he was to late. Laertes dies from the poison soaked rapier. Hamlet walks up to Claudius, makes him drink the poisonous wine and then stabs him with Laertes’ poisonous sword. Hamlet then talks to Horatio; “Horatio I’m as good as dead”(5.2.349).     Once Laertes discovers that his father has been killed, he assumes immediately that the killer must be Claudius. An effect of his speculation is his instinctive desire to retaliate against Polonius's murderer. He says, "To hell, allegiance! Vows, to the blackest devil! Conscience and grace, to the profoundest pit! I dare damnation. To this point I stand, that both worlds I give to negligence, let come what comes.     Laertes’ issues with Hamlet begin as mostly minor, where he attempts to dissuade Ophelia from succumbing to Hamlet’s romantic approaches, telling her, “For Hamlet and the trifling of his favor... [it is] forward, not permanent, sweet, nor lasting, the perfume and suppliance of a minute. No more” (I.iii. 5-10). He does end up creating more problems for Hamlet than he had originally intended, or even possibly realized, by taking away that which he most desired, in the form of Ophelia, which influences many of Hamlet’s actions throughout the play. As the story progresses, though, Laertes’ importance grows when he challenges Claudius’ right to the throne by accusing him of his father’s murder. Claudius is innocent, and able to convince Laertes of this, and postpones any immediate attempts for the throne. This aids the beginning of their alliance, which prompts Laertes’ most devastating action towards Hamlet, the duel. This duel demonstrates just how desperate Laertes and Claudius both are to be rid of Hamlet, as both risk sacrificing their honor and honesty to ensure his death. The duel also serves to demonstrate the lesson that quests for vengeance tend to hurt all involved, as well as the common expression “death is the great equalizer”…
