Thesis Statement: “If a physician of high standing, and one’s own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression-a slight hysterical tendency-what is one to do?” – The Yellow Wallpaper. Although both Hamlet by Shakespeare and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman use Men’s domineering attitude, the weakness of women, and the onset of depression as prominent themes, they use these themes to make opposite points through analysis and comparison, this paper will explore the significance of these major themes in both books

The Weakness of Women:
In the Yellow Wallpaper the Narrator doesn’t stand up for herself
She remains weak in that she doesn’t see anything wrong with what he’s doing
She has convinced herself that all she has is a mild form of depression as such does not see the major problem until later.
Women play weak while being manipulative (Gertrude manipulating the king)
Ophelia manipulating Hamlet
In Hamlet Gertrude doesn’t see the problem with her deceased husband’s brother being her new husband
She’s weak in that she allows her husband and Hamlet to dictate everything without standing up for what she believes is right herself.
She is too focused her dignity and her importance to her kingdom that she is unable to see that her new husband is ruining what her deceased husband put together to keep his kingdom stable.
Even sadder is how she treats her son when he tries to bring up the way his mother is treated by his uncle.
She is so afraid of Hamlet’s mood swings that she cowers away from her duties as his mother which leaves Hamlet running rampant around the castle doing whatever he wanted to do.
Men’s Domineering Attitude:
In The Yellow Wallpaper the Narrator unfortunately has married one of the worst people.
