(An Analysis of the Theme of Death in Act 5)
In the play Hamlet, there are many different themes. The theme of death; however, is seen many times throughout the play. Not only to characters actually die, but there are scenes and conversations in the play that foreshadow death. There are even times when there is a ripple of events that lead Hamlet himself to his death. In Act 5, the ripple of events occur, and the theme of death is shown. He talks about how in death, you just get eaten by worms. This is shown when he says, “Why, e’en so, and now my Lady Worm’s.” (page 264, line 84) He also mentions in the play that we fat our food to fat ourselves, and we fat ourselves for the worms. Talking to the skull Hamlet says, “Now get you to my lady’s chamber and tell her, let her paint an inch thick, to this favour she must come.” (page 270, lines 179-181) The whole time Hamlet was talking to the gravedigger and talking to the skull, he never knew that he was standing by Ophelia’s grave, and that she was dead.
