Hamlet leadership
Hamlet
Hamlet is one of the everlasting plays written by Shakespeare in 1603. Hamlet is based on a true story, which demonstrates the young Prince of Denmark “Prince Hamlet” who’s Father was killed by his own brother Claudius. All the characters in Hamlet fight for power, Gertrude married Claudius so she can stay a queen, Prince Hamlet is unhappy about his uncle getting the crown even though he was supposed to be getting the crown. Worst of them all is Claudius who is driven by his greed to commit his own brother’s murder for the crown and the queen. Character of Claudius in “Hamlet” demonstrates to the reader that Human nature is fundamentally very greedy, power hungry and vengeful because of leadership, which is demonstrated by, Shakespeare through the literary devices such soliloquy and metaphor.
Claudius’s power hunger blinded his human nature. Murdering the king, stealing his crown and the queen are not the only things Claudius had done. Claudius married Gertrude right after the death of King Hamlet and gave out a speech in order to get accepted by the nobles of the court in which he says “Though yet of Hamlet our dear brother’s death… Therefore our sometime sister, now our queen, Th' imperial jointress to this warlike state, Have we—as ’twere with a defeated joy, with an auspicious and a dropping eye, with mirth in funeral and with dirge in marriage (1.2.13). According to this speech by Claudius he clearly states to the people in the court that his urgent and sinful marriage to Gertrude had happened because for the better of the kingdom. This soliloquy by Claudius Is obviously for Hamlet to forget his Fathers death because of the fear that the more he bring up his fathers death the more likely people would look into it. In order for him to convince the nobles of court he keeps going on with the speech and says “Young Fortinbras, Holding a weak supposal of our worth Or thinking by our late dear brother’s death Our state to be disjoint and out of frame, ….So much for him” (1.2.13). According to this now Claudius relates back to when King Hamlet took the land from Norway and now since the army from Norway is trying to attack Denmark again, Claudius totally avoids the war and wins the nobles in the court. Power hunger in Claudius is so strong that he would do anything to keep his queen and the crown by having the people of Denmark by his side.
Human Nature changes once it comes to leadership and crown. A great example of it is presented in “Hamlet” through the soliloquy of Claudius. Claudius is so greedy and blinded for his crown that when he confesses for his sins he says, “O, my offence is rank it smells to heaven; It hath the primal eldest curse upon’… All may be well” (3.3.37). According to this Claudius says his crime is so bad that god can smell it. The “primal eldest curse” is the reference to the murder of Abel by his brother Cain and in this case Claudius is presented as Cain. Then he says, “My crown, mine own ambition, and my queen. May one be pardoned and retain th' offense?” (3.3.37) According to this Claudius shows how greedy he is since he asks if there are any possibilities if he can keep the crown, his power and the queen and still be forgiven. The entire soliloquy by Claudius demonstrates how Claudius is just asking god for even more favors, which is not an act of confession since he believes whatever he did, was the right thing to do for his ambition. Being greedy while confessing for the crimes Claudius committed are not the only thing Claudius did. Leadership makes Claudius’s human nature to be very devious. Claudius act of sneakiness is the reason behind everyone’s death in the play. Claudius is obviously happy that Hamlet had murdered Polonius. As soon as Laertes hears about his fathers death he comes back to Denmark right away seeking for revenge and this is what Claudius says “Now must your conscience my acquaintance seal, And you must put me in your heart for friend, Sith you have heard, and with a knowing ear, That he which hath your noble father slain Pursued my life” (4.7.5) According to this Claudius is proving himself not guilty and telling Laertes that Hamlet had killed his father not him. “And you must put me in your heart for friend” Claudius talking to a common person like this definitely demonstrates that he is manipulating Laertes to kill Hamlet. This is backfiring Laertes because when Laertes asked Claudius why did he send Hamlet away? His simple answer was because he was being a good husband and because Gertrude can’t see her son getting hurt. Claudius act of killing Hamlet is very sneaky since he sends Hamlet to England with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern so they can murder him in England and make it look like an accident. Claudius defends himself and his crown by sneaking and most deaths look like accidents that are obviously caused by him. Human nature can be very greedy, power hungry and sneaky when it comes to leadership. This has been demonstrated by Shakespeare play in Hamlet by one of the Evil character Claudius. At first Claudius murders his own brother for crown and the queen and then manipulates the people of Denmark to focus on the present by trying to make them forget about the past and worry about future. He wins peoples attention by avoiding war with Norway. Nonetheless Claudius human nature is filled with such greediness that when he asks for forgiveness he yet still wants to keep his power and queen, which is not an act of forgiveness. Other then being greedy and power hungry Claudius acts of sneakiness not just kills everyone else but himself as well. Being a leader affects ones human nature to become very filthy, Selfish and Sneaky just in order to maintain their power and their status. Being a good leader means maintaining the power and status without changing their human nature.

American author, John Steinbeck once said “Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts... perhaps the fear of a loss of power.” The theme of corruption is demonstrated in Hamlet by a series of events that lead to devastating decay. The “beginning of the end” is caused by Claudius, the present king of Denmark, Gertrude’s new spouse, and Hamlet’s uncle. Claudius is an intelligent antagonist whose Machiavellian plan of fratricide and his thirst for power drives Shakespeare’s tragedy. His powerful ability to manipulate brings Hamlet to insanity, but also brings short-term peace to the kingdom of Denmark. Critics argue that this trait would not leads to Claudius’ demise if it were not for Hamlet. However, Claudius’ own fear of his corruption being exposed destroys his facade of a capable king and ultimately leads his downfall.…

This is a reaction to what occurred in Scene 2 when Claudius and Hamlet actually talk to each other. Claudius opens the scene with a long monologue to the court and in it I get the sense that he is trying to behave as an appropriate new kings who had just came to the throne. But, he only has the throne because he married his brother’s widow, Gertrude. He says all the right things under the circumstances, but it is all still a bit off-putting to me. For example, when he says thank you for “going with this affair along” almost acknowledging the inappropriate mature of the situation.…

Like most great writers, Shakespeare acquired his inspiration from the world that transpired around him. Cultural politics and social norms of the Elizabethan and Jacobean era are revealing too many readers through Shakespearean literature. In the play Hamlet, Shakespeare displayed precise concepts of the time period he was living in. The most evident concept shown in the play is the struggle for power between ruthless monarchs. This is most prominently noticed in the play when Claudius murders King Hamlet “I am still possess’d, Of those effects for which I did the murder My crown, mine own ambition, and my queen” (Hamlet 3.3 57-60). Claudius assassinates his King Brother out of an ambitious greed for the power of Denmark’s kingship. The…

He embodies a full course of human emotion, ranging from grief, love, anger, rage, and passion to fear and insanity. Throughout the course of the play, Claudius is manipulating the royal court and Hamlet. Immediately following his murder of the late king of Denmark, he cons the royal court into believing that the passing of the late king caused him much grief. However, Claudius exhibits no contrition for murdering the king because of “fruits” he had gained from it: “[his] crown, [his] own ambition, and [his queen]” (III.iii.59). He has no intention of handing over the “fruits” of his crime, that he is well past any chance of redemption. Claudius is unwilling to surrender everything he has gained from his crime because it was those ambitions that drove him to commit the murder in the first place. Claudius maintains his power by acting in favor of the people’s anticipations. Even after he had already wed Gertrude, Claudius confessed his sorrow for the late king and how he was overcoming his sorrowed heart to the royal court to be strong for the kingdom (I.ii.10-12). Claudius hastily shifts from the sadness over the late king and merriment of marriage to his future proposals and allegiance to Denmark (I.ii.17-38). In addition, Claudius also requests permission from Laertes father, Polonius, to authorize Laertes to go to France, as opposed to authorizing Laertes himself (I.ii.59-65). This generates favor from the people…

Claudius is unusual in that he is a two-sided character. He seems throughout Hamlet to be an effective king, dealing with all political and military problems that arise with a quick and effective hand. Claudius is able to show emotion and actually feel it. He loves Gertrude and she loves him, so much so that she defends her husband even to her son Hamlet. She could not possibly love a dark and threatening man. Claudius is not merely a cold-blooded murderer—his conflicting views are very troubling to him.…

She has wealth, but it is not her own. She has power, but only by means of her husband. Gertrude is completely dependent on Claudius for external reasons. She is not only dependent on him for money and power, but for love, affection, and human interaction. In several cases, Claudius uses Gertrude for a personal gain. It is apparent that his marriage to Gertrude is in itself a greedy action. Claudius killed his brother and married his widow, which allowed him to gain the Danish crown. Claudius not only killed Gertrude’s husband, but he also fooled her and wooed her, so he could misappropriate the throne from it’s rightful owner, Hamlet Jr. Claudius also uses Gertrude as a middleman between himself and Hamlet. He pushes Gertrude into uncomfortable situations where she must confront her son about his actions or his intentions to take action. For example in Act III Scene IV, Claudius wills Gertrude into talking with Hamlet and allowing Polonius to listen in on their conversation from behind the arras. Here, Claudius has placed Gertrude in a tippy and undoubtedly uncomfortable position, just so he can gain some insight into Hamlet’s intentions. In this scene, Gertrude is verbally abused by her only son, who then kills Polonius. Therefore, Claudius has emotionally compromised Gertrude for the gain of some knowledge of Hamlet’s love life with Ophelia and his intentions with Claudius, that may or may not be…

He falls short in his appearance by this because he incurs confusion with reality and the facade he is undertaking. This ends up being one of his worst enemies. He is in opposition of one of Machiavelli’s points which states that a prince should not let their emotions get in the way when making rash choices on behalf of the kingdom. He Split between personal morals and willfulness, he battles between inaction and action. His battle proves to be detrimental at times due to the missed opportunity of ending Claudius swiftly and effortlessly, “Now I might do it. Now he is apraying/And now I’ll do’t (Shakespeare 3.3.7475). Moments after he said that, he has a change of heart, missing a perfect opportunity, “To take him in the purging of his soul/When he is fit and seasoned for his passage?/No”(3.3.8688). Thinking he will get an even better moment and using this as an excuse to feel peace at mind, he stashes his sword, “Up,sword, and know thou a more horrid hent” (3.3.89). His idling in this is situation deems him unworthy in affirming a position of power in Machiavelli’s eyes. He appears to be weak to him because he goes against his belief that “it will always be more advantageous for you to declare yourself”(Machiavelli, 34). On the contrary, a prince should be strong in declaring himself and be able to protect his kingdom “without national arms no Princedom is safe” (Machiavelli 37). Hamlet cannot protect…

Shakespeare develops Hamlet’s character in relation to Claudius. First example is Hamlet puts on a play to see if Claudius would break down and confess that he killed King Hamlet. “That guilty creatures sitting at a play. Have by the very cunning of the scene, been struck so to the soul that presently. They have proclaimed their malefactions.” (Shakespeare, 2:2, lines 567-570). Hamlet invited players to come to the castle and perform a play for the king and queen. The play is going to reenact the night Claudius killed King Hamlet. Second example is Hamlet seeks revenge on Claudius. “Prompted to my revenge by heaven and hell.” (Shakespeare, 2:2, line 562). When Hamlet saw the ghost of his dad in act 1, his dad said he needs to seek revenge on Claudius. Final example is Claudius…

Hamlet is a play written in 1600-1602 by William Shakespeare. Hamlet feels a responsibility to avenge his father’s murder by his uncle dad Claudius, who is now the king and well-guarded. Hamlet’s biggest flaw is that he struggles with his doubts about whether he can trust his father’s ghost and whether killing Claudius is the most appropriate action to take. Both Branagh and Zeffirelli show that Revenge is only going to make situations worse and bring more harm to the avenger and many others.…

She wanted to help Hamlet, but she could not stop herself from loving Claudius. Thus Gertrude was feeling guilty about her quick marriage to Claudius after her late Husband’s death, “I doubt it is no other but the main: His father's death, and our o'erhasty marriage" (II. ii. 56-57). She thought that her marriage was causing Hamlet's behavior, because it started after her hasty marriage to Claudius. Also she never told Hamlet about her love towards Claudius until they got married. She was right about the marriage being the cause of Hamlet's behavior, but this started after Hamlet heard these things from the ghost of his father, “If thou hast nature in thee bear it not; let not the royal bed of Denmark be a couch for luxury and damned incest" (I. v. 81-83). However, Gertrude only knew one of the causes for Hamlet's behavior; and she did not really see the big picture. She still felt guilty about her decision; the only thing was that she would not stop now. Seeing that she already did it, she only wants to help her son adjust to this truth now. But Claudius wants to help Hamlet get accustomed to his new…

After reading through the play of “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare. I though the main thing the plot focused on was the corruption of a kingdom. Throughout the story there are many corrupt acts. However, they all followed after Claudius became king. After Claudius ended the king’s life so that he could claim the throne, making him the beginning of the end for the kingdom. Hamlet seemed to be the least corrupt at first until he starts to slip into madness when he was uncertain if Claudius was what his father’s ghost said he was. Which was also the main theme this story focused on, the impossibility of certainty. Throughout the beginning of the play. the main conflict was person vs self, between Hamlet and his thoughts, trying to convince…
