Handling Intense Situation Analysis
Handling intense situation has never been easy for me. I tend to get nervous and go “blank” when intense situations occur in my life. As such, I find myself not knowing what to do. I even get scared that I might do the wrong thing during an intense situation. My insecurities make handling intense situations an obstacle. Often times, I walk away instead of handling the situation. Consequently, these situations never get resolved and often continuously occur over and over again. Therefore, finding comfort in handling intense situations is my top priority and goal at the moment. When I am not in class or at my internship, I try to do some self-exploration activities, such as journaling and reading. I ordered a self-exploration journal online where I can draw and write my current feelings. Also, the journal …show more content…
If the situation was handled inappropriately, the crisis or intense situation may get worse. Thus, finding the appropriate steps and interventions is important for helping professionals. As I previously stated, I do not find much comfort in handling intense situations. Consequently, discharging is even more uncomfortable. I often walk away instead of resolving these situations. Although it does not happen often, I do find myself discharging intense situations by being supportive. I started doing this after I began the Counselor Education program here at Delta State University. I remember learning the importance of using Carl Roger’s core conditions, such as positive regard, congruence, and empathy, with our clients from the very beginning of this program. It is something we still hear in every class. At first, I was hesitant about using Rogerian skills, however, these conditions helped my counseling sessions from pre-practicum to internship go extremely smooth.     “The foundation of crisis intervention is the development of rapport—a state of understanding and comfort—between client and counselor” (Kanel, 2006 p.70). This stage is so important that no real work can be accomplished before it is established. A person needs to feel understood and validated before they are comfortable enough to open up to you. Some of the skills necessary for this stage are basic attending skills, questions, paraphrasing, reflection of feelings, and summarizations. “The primary purpose of using the basic attending skills is to gain a clear understanding of the internal experience of the crisis as the client sees it” (Kanel, 2006 p. 70). First and foremost, this begins with listening. This is not to be confused with hearing. You really need to listen. You want to show the client that you are completely there for them by maintaining eye contact, using a soft, soothing voice, and have attentive body language (sitting close and having a relaxed posture). The questions you choose to ask are also important. Close ended questions generally require short answers like “yes” and “no”. These are generally only used to answer factual information. Using open ended questions allows for the client to open up and reveal their true feelings. “When the question is posed effectively, it helps move the interview along and allows gathering essential information about the nature of the crisis” (Kanel, 2006 p. 73). Paraphrasing is also an essential skill. This is done by either restating to the client what it is that you thought you heard, or by using the clarifying technique which is just asking a question that would clarify the information just given by the client. “The intent is to encourage elaboration of the statements to let the client know that you, the counselor, have understood or heard the message; to help the client…

    Carl Rogers developed person centred therapy believing individuals design their own destiny and can successfully deal with their struggles and distresses as they have within them sufficient ability, though they may be unaware of the potential for growth and improvement they hold.     The issue of termination is an important aspect of the counselling process because it marks the end of a relationship between a counseller and client. Although I have never been in a counselling relationship where the termination process was an important factor, I can relate this process to that of a breakup with my partner when he moved interstate. We both had feelings of dependency on each other and had a mutual care for each other, but knew that we could not continue on with the relationship, so we terminated the relationship so to speak because basic contact would be too emotionally difficult. Similarly, a client and counseller relationship is at a deep level where the feelings and problems of the client are being experienced also by the counseller through empathic measures. Thus, termination of such a relationship can be a life-altering experience. Nevertheless, if both parties respect each other and are honest in voicing their reasons for ending the relationship, as it was in my case, then the end of the relationship can be seen positively, as a new beginning where both parties learn to become more independent and grow as individuals. I feel that my experience was quite similar to a counselling relationship in that we were both on the same level without one party being subordinate to the other and the complete separation ultimately helped me to grow as a person.     The methods of practice differ in each situation, but they are similar in preparation. Practitioners must first make an evaluation or assessment of their client. This process take’s patience and practitioners must be able to listen actively to their client with no distractions and without any preconceived notions of what the speaker is saying (Martin, 2007, p. 47). After a practitioner makes a clinical assessment, they can decide on what intervention strategy to use with a client. The Task-Centered Approach is an example of one intervention strategy that a counselor may use. This strategy helps clients who think they are powerless over simple challenges caused by psychosocial problems and allows counselors help define these challenges and set small, agreed upon goals with clients to help them increase self-esteem (Martin, 2007, p. 55). Reframing is another intervention strategy. This strategy helps clients look at the different perspectives of a situation instead of only the negative.
