I can almost feel it. Feel my hate, disgust, yearning.
It's clammy palms are clasped well within my dry, aged ones; I was choosing to ignore how the tightness of my grip was spitefully cutting into the youthful flesh. I was choosing to ignore many things. I also wasn't the only thing cutting into the lament faced mass of bones before me. My eyes reluctantly glanced up to his withered face, lines of wisdom and experience coating his physiognomy. A flinch beckoned me to avert my dull blue orbs to my hands. There was a fresh red matter spoiling my prized rings; thats when the obtrusive longing swayed my state. The nostalgic memories seeping from the hippocampus and exposing itself through a tightened grip, I'm sure she noticed.
To write this piece, I reread the chapter's where the Commanders Wife, Serena Joy, made an appearance before and during the ceremony and focused on her character as a whole. I made notes on her interaction with both Offred and the people around her, as well as her physical appearance.
From Offred's point of view, Serena Joy comes across as quite a bitter character, with a calculated mindset; so I wanted that to come across in the short piece, as well as an insight to the reasons Serena may act like that. 'She didn't step aside to let me in [...] She wanted me to feel that I could not come into the house unless she said so', highlighted Serena's silent protest in Offred's appearance. It was clear she was reluctant to let her into her home, so she gathered what little control she had left in this situation and abused it pettily. It was clear she preferred to use her body to show her authority, rather than words, so I touched on that also. Her physical appearance described in Chapter three, such as her 'eyelids were tired-looking' and 'diamond studded hands' also contributed to displaying how her emotions guided her actions and created her character.
I also noted on Atwood's style of writing. Although
