each time I entered my patients' room.
Using the technique of therapeutic communication, I was able to calm a patient down till my nurse arrived in the room when I answered a call light, and was not able to fulfill a patient's request because she was on a clear liquid diet. 06/18... In the process of administrating digoxin, I took advantage of the drug book online to verify the rate the drug should be pushed. I took advantage of the technological tool that was available to make the right choice to prevent any harm to my patient. Informatics in nursing has drastically reduced error in the field. I did a fall risk assessment of all my patients at the beginning of the shift and placed call lights at patient's reach. I realized some of the nurses on my floor did not perform this important task because they were busy trying to get to the orders placed by physicians, to improve the quality of care for patients, we must ensure that patients are safe from falls to prevent complications. Beginning of shift fall risk assessment should be a routine of every nurse. 06/25 I worked in the ICU today, on a controversial case. My patient was an illegal immigrant with no health insurance, but that
did not change or alter the standard of care provided to that particular patient and/or any other patient. I was professional in all my duties and made sure his family members were updated on whatever was going on. I also used the concept of patient-centered care, although my patients had similar conditions, they were two different individuals and therefore, I provided holistic care based on their needs with a different plan of care. For instance Mr. Z could not speak English, so, I made sure I communicated through his daughters and a Spanish interpreter. 07/02 I worked in the OR today shadowing the circulating nurse. I advocated for my patient by making sure all other parties involved in my patient care adhered to the system-based protocols about patient safety. I also ensure I worked with the pathology lab to prepare sample as fast as possible to reduce the duration of surgery. This action helps reduced cost, improved patient safety and helped team building. 07/09 I worked in the PCU today. I had the chance to help my CNA make a decision using one of the future nurse competencies: leadership, at about 1500 my CNA was about to feed a diabetic patient who had a blood glucose of 148mg/dL at 1300. I ask if the patient's blood glucose levels were checked before her meal. Because of this inquiry, we were able to prevent any harm. I took the opportunity to educate my CNA about the importance of checking glucose levels right before meals for diabetic patients.
