Handy's Monologue
“Hurry, follow me, I know a way out,” whispered Handy to Whyatt. “Are you sure, cause I thought it was this way,” said Whyatt pointing in the other direction. “Yes, I’m sure, and keep your voice down if you want to escape,” replied Handy quickly. All of the sudden a shadow flashed by them! “What was that,” whispered Whyatt in a panicked voice. “That... is the Vigilante,” said Handy in one hopeless breath. “You kids have 10 seconds to put everything back or else,” said the Vigilante loudly. It had just hit summer of 2005 and all the kids were filled with joy as they hung out by the pool, went to the grocery shop to get candy, and ran around their park. These kids lived in a small town called Cowlitz with a population of under 500 people. Most all of the kids were having fun, except Handy and Whyatt. These two were poor. They lost their parents at age five and had learned to make the best of what they had. They were twin boys, now eleven, and they lived behind the grocery shop. They talked to the grocer, Jack, quite a bit and realized he didn’t have a very interesting life and the only interesting thing about him was …show more content…
“Jack,” says Handy. “We’re sorry for trying to rob your shop. We were just trying to get food for the summer since we don’t have any money.” “It’s okay kids. I’m just glad you reconsidered your decisions, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to give you this,” Jack says with a smile as he hands them a big bag of food and candy along with a big plum-cake. Handy and Whyatt’s faces light up. After a few moments Handy is the first one to be able to speak. “Thank you, sir. This is the nicest thing someone has ever done for us.” Handy replies with tears of joy. Then Handy and Whyatt walk out each taking a big bite out of the plum-cake and return back to their little spot behind Jack’s grocer

A dramatic monologue is a poem written in the voice of a specific, definite character who is not the poet: the speaker is a persona, a mask. It’s a monologue because it has only one speaker, though there is sometimes (as in Browning’s “My Last Duchess”) a silent interlocutor whose unheard (or unread) responses help shape the speaker’s discourse and the meaning of the poem. (In such poems addressed to a specific listener, though only one person speaks, both the speaker’s and the listener’s point of view are inscribed into the poem.) It’s dramatic because it’s as if spoken by a character in a play, “a poem which seems to be a speech taken from some dramatic encounter between an imagined character and someone he or she addresses” (who may, as in a soliloquy, be him or herself, or even no one) (Shira Wolosky, The Art of Poetry: How to Read a Poem). By revealing a character in the context of a dramatic situation (a “soul in action”), a dramatic monologue provides knowledge not just about the speaker’s personality, but about the time, the setting, key events, and other characters involved in the situation at hand, even if they are not present.…
