The article by Maryellen Weimer “Tough Questions on Texting in the Classroom “ Where she write about texting in class, what students said about it as she also asked questions. Texting is what student do all time, everywhere and anytime, especially in boring classes. Some students think they can text and focus on the lecture at the same time, whereas they can't do so, students can't take good notes while they are texting. Most of the teachers ban phones and texting during class to grantee that students won't be distracted by texting. According to the text “56% of the cohort said they were currently taking a class in which the teacher banned texting. 49% said they texted anyway.” Some students do text anyway even if texting was banned in class,…
The second reason that students shouldn't be allowed to use cell phones in school for education is for the sake of the teachers, a teacher should not have to fight for the attention of his or her students due to technology. After twenty years of teaching history and ESL for Lowell High School, Miriam Morgenstern is quitting her job for multiple reasons. One of Morgenstern’s reasons for quitting is her students and their cell phones, she explains her frustration, “The texting, tweeting, and snapchatting during class time are ‘an incredible distraction, and makes it much more difficult to teach,’ she said. ‘It’s pretty hard to compete with a very funny YouTube video.’” It is unacceptable that students are using their phones while the teacher…
After reviewing Sheyenne's cell phone policy and researching the benefits and drawbacks of cell phones, I urge you to revise the cell phone policy, and allow more cell phone use in the school. Cell phones are permitted in certain parts of the school, but the technology needs to be integrated into the classrooms. With this incorporation of technology in the classroom it can provide more depth in the lesson, and collaboration among students. Some teachers may see the use of cell phones in the classroom as disrespectful. They perceive this as disrespectful, for they took time to prepare the lesson, and the student is not paying attention. In actuality the student is not disturbing others, and if they decide to not pay attention,…
There is more than one side to the debate about cell phone availability during school. One claim is that students should be allowed to have their phones on them and use their cell phones during appropriate times. In the article, the authors provide details about how there are numerous reasons why cell phones should be allowed during school. Students should be allowed access to cell phones, because if they are responsible enough to be going off to college in a year or so, they should be responsible enough to have a cell phone on them and use it wisely (George and Cook). Another reason why cell phones should be allowed in school is because otherwise it can create a divide between the students and the teachers. Students are so invested in their phones, so if a teacher…
First, I believe that cell phone use in class is distractions because it may cause children fail the class and not having a bright future. Most people do not have self-control, especially children. As the author mentions, “students fail is because of distractions in the classroom.” Children take cells will be distracted in classroom; by the end of semester, they will get low grade or fail the class because they do not have enough knowledge. After several of failures, students will put themselves become bad students, so a bad student may not go to college; it directly affects their future. However, if students do not have electronic devices distract them, they will learn more in class, and it will affect them in a positive future.…
The scholarly article, Invasion of the Classroom Cell Phones, written by Marilyn Gilroy, discusses the controversial issue on the debate between the affects of cell phones and education. Marilyn Gilroy was a communication professor at the Bergen Community College for 18 years, and since 1992 has written multiple publications for the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education. In Invasion of the Classroom Cell Phone Gilroy talks about the growing problem cell phones are causing for students, parents, administrators, and schools everywhere, and notes the inevitability of these handhelds in today’s society.…
Cell Phones shouldn't be aloud in schools because of all the bullying and harassment that goes on in the classroom. They could use their cellular devices for cheating on worksheets, quizzes, and tests. Students can take pictures of other students without their permission and post them on social media accounts like Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc. But Cell Phones should be aloud in school because they can take their homework home and be able to find their assignments easier. They should also be allowed in schools because it is easier for the students to follow along in reading and watching videos.…
Texting in class is a very touchy subject, and can be argued from many different aspects. One of the main things though, is that texting in class would not be disruptive just for the student texting, but also to the students sitting around the student that is doing the texting. In this today’s generation, everywhere around us people of all ages and cultures circle around their cell phones in everything they do. Whether we are walking down the road, in the grocery style, in class, or even much dangerously, in driving, cell phones have grown to be a very vital part of our everyday lives. However, when it comes to cell phones and texting in the classroom, a very controversial answer is given between teachers and students. Students say they don’t see a problem with texting in class, teachers on the other hand, think otherwise. This is where the problem begins; teachers hold a very persuasive argument about why students shouldn’t be allowed to text in class or even use the cell phone at all. Students on the other hand, can also put up a somewhat reasonable argument as well.…
In the other hand, others also disagree with allowing cell phones to be used during class. Many students might take advantage of this and not pay attention to the teacher but be texting others or creating a distraction. The noise or the vibration of the phone can annoy others that try to pay attention. Also, when someone gets his or her phone taken away, it becomes a big distraction to everyone and wastes class time. Cell phones in class can also lead to cheating.…
When New York City installed metal detectors in random schools, over 800 phones were taken away from students (important idea # 2). Scaccia says the distraction that phones provide is one reason students fail at the end of the term (important idea # 3). Parents want their children to be allowed to keep the phones to use in an emergency (important idea # 4). But Scaccia, a teacher, says that safety concerns are not reason enough to allow them in classrooms, since students are mostly not using them to contact their parents anyway (important idea # 5). On the one hand, I agree with Scaccia that cell phones are mostly a distraction in the classroom. On the other hand, we live in dangerous times, and I do think the parents have a point that cell phones are necessary in an emergency (Thesis mentioning the two important ideas that the author plans to discuss in their body…
Could you image going through your whole life, without a cell phone? Many of us have become accustom to the new technology that allows us to communicate so effectively. Today the world uses technology in almost everything it does. No modern artifact has the capability to be so incredibly noticeable and brilliantly built as the cell phone. Cell phones play a huge role in our daily lives. They are an item that every one possesses from, children, students, workers, parents, and etc. In today’s society people would say that the cell phone is a necessity. Starting off as big and bulky, the cell phone has quickly evolved to an easy to carry sophisticated item. Cell phones are changing American culture in multiple ways, from culture norms, values, and use of time. Many say that cell phones are good, but some say they are bad. Is this an argument we could make? However, are cell phones talking away from our students or helping them? It is extremely important; reason is cell phones are affecting our students every day. How are they helping the society, or are they destroying it?…
Have you ever wondered why teachers don’t want students on their cell phones while class is going on? Is it because they want to control you? Is it because they’re mean and unfair? No, it’s for your own good that you don’t use your cell phone in class. A June 2012 journal from Sterling College entitled “EFFECTS OF CLASSROOM CELL PHONE USE ON EXPECTED AND ACTUAL LEARNING” gives us many reasons on why we shouldn’t text while in class. It states that surveys document high rates of students who carry and use their cell phone during class. Another survey was taken to determine the actual effect texting has on your performance. On this survey, students estimated the number of questions they could answer out of 10 when texting and when not texting. For the experiment, they used a repeated measures design with simulated classroom presentations and measured performance on a 10-item quiz. Students expected to lose close to 30% on a quiz and actually did lose close to 30% when texting. Now, I don’t know about you, but a text is not worth me getting a 70% when I could get a 100%.…
Phones shouldn’t be permitted at school because they can be a big distraction to learning. Most teachers approve of my outlook on cellphones. Texting during instruction can hurt your grades. Grades on report cards are stumpy due to cell phones. The purpose is because many students don’t participate in instruction instead they are texting, or on the web. (Pew Research survey states) "In 2008 76% student’s texted in class…
Firstly, cellphones, Teacher are always on them while we are learning. First you hear that little ringtone then it’s the cellphone pulled out right in the middle of a lesson. It’s so annoying isn’t it? So to be fair why can’t students get out there’s as well while the teacher is distracted for a while. We need cellphones in case there were an emergency at school, and we need them to text and talk to friends. But what teachers don’t know is that if they let us use cellphones maybe we’ll repect more and be more responsible!…
In a society where almost everyone over the age of thirteen carries a mobile phone, many school systems have banned these items from school grounds. Why? Many say it’s due to the ‘potential problems’, such as students would not be able to concentrate on their studies. With their hands glued on to their mobile phones busy surfing the web or various social networks, there could be no tiniest concentration paid to the class. This will subsequently lead to terrible grades achieved by the students as a result of not focusing in class. Plus, a loud ringing phone call that breaks the class serenity will also interrupt the learning environment. What else could be more saddening than poor teachers having to be blamed for not executing their duties well, when it was all the mobile phones and their petty owner’s fault of misuse?…
