Hank Kolb Case
GENERAL INFORMATION AND MAJOR PROBLEMS The company Hank Kolb works in is a big plant with 1200 people working in it. Greasex, which is a specialized degreasing solvent packed in a spray can, is one of the major products of this company. Hank Kolb was hired as a director of quality assurance. A problem occurred with the new filling equipment in the previous week and some of the cans were pressurized beyond the upper specification limit. If we analyze the main problems in the plant, the fundamental problem is management. There is a lack of cooperation between departments and the management seems to be insufficient to satisfy integration of these departments. There are also some serious problems in the production, design and inspection of the Greasex. Below is the list of these problems in detail:
1. The plant has a poor quality attitude. Quality department isn’t taken seriously by production people. We can understand this from the behavior of the foreman. Wayne Simmons vented the products without even consulting any inspector or employee of the quality department.
2. Operators for the filling equipment are not trained enough to run the equipment. As it is mentioned in the text, operators were transferred from a different department only two weeks ago without any experience.
3. Filling equipment was not designed for the production of Greasex. Therefore the machines are needed to be adjusted and repaired to fit the manufacturing. With respect to this requirement, twelve work orders were placed in the last six months.
4. The plastic nozzle heads purchased from out sources do not fit to Greasex cans and this problem is not properly fixed. They force the heads to fit the cans.
5. The design of the cans have been changed due to market research without any further testing. But this design may cause some problems on filling speed or hydrodynamics.
6. Due to the high pressure in defective cans, venting holes on the cans was

I feel that the Bearington plant’s source of problems and concerns are emerging from a deteriorating equipment, poor management system, and staff that aren’t properly fit for this type of job. In chapter one, as Alex Rogo starts walking through the plant he observes the plant’s equipment was making inexplicable noises. There were outdated lights, computer systems, and an intercom system that could barely be heard over all the sound of the machines. On the other hand, the author was describing the employees as raggedy looking and some were over weight. The master machinist that was in charge of the NCX-10 wasn’t focused on his job and caused the machine to break, thus putting the plant further behind on the order of 41427. Mr. Peach, the Division Vice President is also a key source to the problem at Bearington. Employees at this plant should respect his authority, but they don’t due to his self-centered and stand-off attitude. Peach has also cut many employees from the company and still expects the plant to perform the same if not improve. Technology at the Bearington plant might be somewhat outdated, but management seems to be driving the plant further behind in there orders.…

There were many problems with the company. The company did not have a concrete process that was aligned with the goal. Some of the problems is increased inventories, increased operational expenses and reduced throughput. The company's focus was only on increasing efficiencies. The reason behind this to be more specific, is the installment of new robots that were used to produce more and more finished goods that were not needed in the market and in the case of products needed, there aren't any parts that were available. The plant was unbalanced as it was not balancing the capacity of its resources with the demand from the market. Another reason are bottlenecks that the plant had to deal with.…

Ans) Safelite was the largest nation-wide auto glass company in the United States with about 500 stores, more than 3000 employees and 3000 trucks. The company has started mobile services and gained 12% of market share. Although Safelite offered mobile service from virtually all of its stores by the early 1990s, the main focus of the company was to serve the customers at their place and the trend of the stores was decreasing so forth. The incentive was $1000 to open a new store as bonus. So every employee tried to open a new store rather working hard and improving the production. The employees of the Safelite were required to work for eight hours and according to the CEO John Barlow, they were only putting in windshields for two and a half hours. They were not…

Two recommendations were made as how to solve this problem, implement a new in-house conching technology that was developed or purchase a fifth conventional conch machine.
