THE USES OF ARTICLES IN ENGLISH NOUN PHRASE

ABSTRACT

Noun phrase plays an important role in the construction of a sentence. Lacking knowledge of noun phrase in English, learners could not make understandable sentences. And, it is almost inadequate to discuss the noun phrase without referring at some stage to the class of words known as determiners. This paper, therefore, aims to research on the articles, the most common type of determiners, to examine and report their uses with other determiners in English noun phrase.

THE USES OF THE ARTICLES WITH OTHER DETERMINERS IN ENGLISH NOUN PHRASE

I.INTRODUCTION “Noun rarely stand alone, they are usually accompanied by modifiers. The most common noun modifier in English is determiners” (Berk, 1990, p.89). And the most typical sort of determiners is articles. In both English grammar and English communication, article is one of the most essential elements of forming a noun phrase. Most native speakers of English use articles correctly without considering it, but it can become more confusing when learning English as a foreign language. Therefore, in studying and communicating English, learners always feel confused in how to use articles correctly. Articles also are an familiar title with students, however, the uses of articles are quite complex and not easy to master. This paper will partially help learners understand more clearly in order to avoid making mistakes in studying generally and in forming noun phrases particularly.

PVA is a water soluble synthetic polymer (Maciborski, and Salamone), while Borax is a natural mineral with many household uses. It can be used as herbicide, to bleach teeth, as a household cleaner, and a laundry booster, to name a few (Helmenstine).…
