Hardships and effects of being a single mom and going to college.
Cause and Effect

Being a single mom and going to college at the same time, can be very draining for any woman. Taking care of a child financially by ones self can be a difficult job all on its own, but when you add full time college to this picture, there are many effects that can make this a negative, but brave, choice.

Going to school, puts a lot of stress on this poor mother. She will have very little time for anything else, including sleep. The mother will have to do lots of homework and take care of her child at the same time, leaving her little or no time at all for her family, or even for herself. She will have more expenses that are already ample, because she has no help from a spouse.

This mother will have a lot of stress to deal with as a daily routine. She will wake up earlier than most people will, because she not only has to get herself ready she has to get her child ready as well. This puts a strain on the mothers sleeping patterns, which will eventually cause great amounts of stress.

She will then feed her child, but the busy mother usually eats on the go. After she is finished with school, she will pick up her child from daycare and she will go home.

Just picking up and dropping off children can be very exhausting on anyone. Then after school she will go home and take care of her child until it is bedtime. After her children go to sleep, she gets to do her homework. She will stay up late finishing her 4-6 hours of home work a night and then usually work herself to sleep. Are you stressed out yet? Well you will be when you hear the next part.

Another negative effect of this mother going to college will be that she will have limited amounts of money. She will either need to get a job, a good grant, or a loan. She will need money to live on while she is going to school. If you add working to this picture you may have to hire an on site emergency squad to revive this mother in the morning, because she will be very tired all the time.

She has several choices on what she could do with her money, they include; buying a decent used car, getting her own apartment close to the school she will attend, take a vacation trip with her best friend to Hawaii, or live at home with her family, with no job. She could also put the money back in a savings account to use for the future. I believe Martha should stay living at home with her parents, where she can commute to school and not have the stress over a job. She’s heard that the amounts of work in the classes are greater than those in high school; therefore she would barely have time for a job. Yet single mothers struggle to juggle either working or finding a job and care for a child. In Rosanna Hertz's Working to Place Family at the Center of Life: Dual-Earner and Single-Parent Strategies, she talks about single mothers and what they have to go through in order to take care of their children. Women who work are extremely dedicated to family because they work around caring for a family and the primary source of income for the family is through their job. Because these women have no second person or partner to help them raise the child/ children then they must work twice as hard in order to provide their child with daycare or look for other outside sources to help care for the child while at work. "Unlike the dual-earner couples, these single mothers have fewer resources internal to the family to call on in trying to cultivate external resources- in broader kin and friendship networks- to help them put family first" (254, Hertz, FF). Women also work multiple jobs in order to provide for their children and keep family at the center of their lives. Most women who work multiple jobs or extremely long hours hardly get to see their children. "Her child spent four days a week being cared for at her mother's home and three days a week at her own home. Without her mother's help, the cost would have made it impossible to remain employed" (255, Hertz, FF). Long hours or no benefits, women must rely on other people to care for their children and end up losing quality time with their child because of work demands. Because women do not have that second person or partner to help share in the child rearing, they must create external relationships to help fill in that gap left behind by being a single mother. They must create "support networks" to raise a…

The idea of so much time and money spent on a degree that may not result in a job is disheartening. But in a changing world where everything is uncertain, researchers and experts agree that it is better to have a degree than not. It’s harder to be successful today than in the past without a college education, and when considering the trends and what it means for the future, it makes sense to invest in yourself through education. Every parent should encourage their child to go to college and work hard for a degree, even though it means sacrificing time and money. Even parents who did not complete their college education and had lucrative careers have the responsibility to encourage their children to receive an education. Although a degree is not a guarantee against unemployment, it does provide a safety net and improves the chances of finding and keeping a job, even in rough economic periods. Right now, going to college seems like a daunting task, but down the road, children will thank their parents for encouraging them and for making the necessary sacrifices to enable them to earn their…
