Company Overview
In 1903 the first Harley Davidson motorcycle was built by William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson (Harley, 2013). Harley Davidson motorcycles started out as racing bikes, being known not only their fast but also reliable motor (Harley, 2013). The company quickly grew and Harley Davidson motorcycles become an American icon.
Harley Davidson Inc. became incorporated in 1981 (Harley, 2013). Five years later Harley Davidson became a publicly traded company (Harley 2013). Harley Davidson’s stocks are now traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Over the years Harley Davidson has continued to grow and develop. Their stock prices continue to increase. Currently Harley Davidson stocks are trading at $65.23 compared to $31.50 in the beginning of 2010 (Google, 2013).
The headquarters of Harley Davidson Inc. is located in Milwaukee Wisconsin. However, there are dealerships all over the United States and in several other locations all over the world such as North America, Africa, and Europe. All of Harley’s products are sold through independent dealers. Currently there are over 6,400 people employed with Harley Davidson (Forbes, 2013). Keith Wandell, age 63 is the CEO of Harley Davidson Inc. and also chairman of the board (Forbes, 2013). Mr. Wandell makes approximately .98 million a year and owns .10% of Harley Davidson Inc.’s stock (Forbes, 2013).
Currently the company is made up of two different business segments; motorcycle and related products and a financial services segment (Harley, 2013). Most of the income for Harley Davidson comes from the motorcycle and related products segment. There are 5 major bikes lines manufactured by Harley Davidson which include Touring, Dyna, Soft Tail, Sportster and V-Rod models.
