Harmony Within Diversity Must Be Nurture Analysis

By 2016, Malaysian’s population is reported to increase up to 31.7million persons. 91.8% of this estimated number are Malaysian citizens. They compromise of 64.7% of Bumiputera and Malays; 24.6% of Chinese, 7.3% of Indians and 0.7% of other ethnics such as Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau and Kadazandusun. Despite that, Malaysia succeed in putting itself on the 30th spot in the Global Peace Index Rankings. We Malaysians are recognize for our low crime rates compared to other countries, minimal terrorist acts and violent demonstrations; good diplomatic relations with neighbouring countries, stable politics and harmony within our many ethnic groups. These impressive achievements are all results of our ancestors’ sweat and blood in fighting for independence,
Nurture can be defined as an act to care and encourage the growth and development of something. I conclude that the phrase ‘harmony within diversity must be nurtured’ refers to the act of inculcating the spirit of unity in younger generation while embellishing the spirit of togetherness in the older generation. The government, learning institutions and media play a huge part in achieving this dream. Both government and learning institutions should organize open events so participants from different backgrounds can participate. On the other hand, the media should publicize the catch of living in a multi-racial country. They should also publicize how disunity between the subjects can be the downfall of a country. These efforts, if done continuously, can instill the spirit of unity among the people of Malaysia. The spirit of unity, togetherness and teamwork will lead to harmony within
All Malaysians, without consideration of age, position and profile should put aside their beliefs and principles in order to maintain the peace we have already gained. We should try our level best to avoid any form of arguments or misunderstandings for disunity will ensue. It is also important for us to narrate what damage disunity had done in the past to youngsters. George Santayana once quoted “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. By informing our youngsters about the past, they will learn a lesson from it. For example, we can avoid incidents such as the violent demonstration that happened on the 13th May 1969 due to disunity.
