To be sure, no lesson provides an authenticity and durability as that gained through first-hand experience. However, if the world's destiny hinged upon the inevitability of personal experience learned through tangible performance, there would undoubtedly be a continuous recycling of mistakes, misadventures, and catastrophes throughout history. As a result, societal advancement would be limited to the knowledge gained and exercised in a lifetime. Imagine every generation being left to repeat essentially the same process in a perpetual state of affairs. In the 1993 movie Groundhog Day, the protagonist (Bill Murray) had to repeat the same day over again, scores of times, in order to gain enough information to break out of an inexplicable cycle…

Groundhog Day is a very interesting and entertaining movie about a meteorologist who becomes trapped in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. It stars the hysterical Bill Murray as Phil Connors, a sarcastic Philadelphia weatherman who is far too full of himself. He travels with the entourage of cameraman Larry, Chris Elliott, and his lust interest Rita, played by Andie MacDowell. Phil lives through the same day, Groundhog's day, repeatedly with no consequences. Each time around he does things a bit differently, yet little is changed. Strangely enough, the movie applies to what we are learning in religion class.…

The movie, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, is directed very differently than how the book is written. The book is written in letters that Charlie writes to a friend. In the book, it’s harder to “get to know” the characters. Charlie describes them very well but it is harder to actually feel like you “know” the characters. Charlie sometimes narrates the movie, but it is also in 3rd person. Because the movie is also in 3rd person, you can “get to know” the characters better. In the movie Charlie also has flashbacks. When he has them he describes himself as “getting bad again”. Because the book was written in 2nd person, Charlie never had flashbacks.…

While I was reading The Death Of A Salesman it was hard for me to picture the characters or the setting till I read further into the play. When I watched the movie I was very pleased to see that Dustin Hoffman played the main Character Willy Loman. Dustin Hoffman played the part perfectly, because I’ve seen him in both as a comedic character and a more serious one, it made it easier for me to believe that he could play the role of Willy. As I read more into the play I was wondering how they were going to act out Willy’s flashbacks in the movie. Biff Loman’s character in the movie was played by John Malkovich,…

    1. There are many virtues in life that one may have. Virtues are characteristics we have that according to Aristotle help us lead the good life. Among these many virtues is generosity. Being generous can help us lead a virtuous life, thus a good one. However what is generosity? Generosity is a virtue but what makes somebody generous? First, we need to understand the most basic part of being generous, and that is the act of giving. In order to be virtuous, one must act, and in this case by giving. Giving to those in need may be seen as virtuous. By helping those in need and giving to them we may accomplish a better life. However, further thinking leads us to understand that giving in itself is not enough. We need to be able to know how to give just the right amount. By giving either too much or not enough we cannot be virtuous. When a person gives too much, one cannot help the other person. The person in need may become dependent on the person who is giving and receiver will not learn to benefit from the generosity. On the other hand, not giving enough is stinginess. It shows the lack of character and can be seen as selfish. Obviously by not giving enough or giving too much, one cannot accomplish the true goal of giving, which is to help others. In conclusion, generosity is one of life’s many virtues and it is seen as the act of giving. We know that the act of giving has to be done in just the right amount in order to be virtuous and have a fulfilling life.…

In conclusion, Goodman reveals a general sense of indifference for Phil through the use of emotionally detached details, varying sentence lengths, and simplistic diction with a tinge of negative connotation to summarize Phil’s life. Not only does this story serve as a metaphor for the “company man” of that milieu, but it also shows the detriments of the “work first, family later” mindset that men often…
