A lifeline for slaves!Harriet Tubman was born a slave on a plantation in Maryland in 1820 or 1821.Her birth name was was Araminta Ross. Harriet Tubman was a very important person in the history of slavery.Born a slave herself,She became a “conductor”of the Underground Railroad and succeeded in leading other slaves to freedom.
Life as a slave was difficult.Harriet worked a number of jobs on the plantation. Jobs such as plowing fields and leading produce into wagons. Also hauling logs and driving oxen. At the age of thirteen Harriet received a serious head injury.A slave owner threw an iron weight and hit Harriet.It caused dizzy spells and blackouts for the rest of her life. During this time some states in the
northern United States outlawed slavery.
Slaves would try to escape to the north using the Underground Railroad. There wasn’t a real railroad.There were a number of safe homes called stations, slaves hid there as they traveled north. The people that helped the slaves were called conductors. Slaves would move at night from station to station, Hiding in the woods or sneaking onto trains until they finally reached the north and freedom. Harriet became famous as an Underground Railroad conductor.
Harriet was truly brave, Risking her life and freedom to help others. She led nineteen different escapes from the south and helped around 300 slaves to escape. Despite a bounty on her head, she returned to the south to lead her family and others to freedom. Harriet’s bravery did not end with the Underground Railroad, she also helped during the Civil War. She nursed injured soldiers, and helped on a military campaign that lead to rescue. Harriet helped her family,including her mother and father, to escape. Also she was never caught and never lost a slave.
In conclusion,having been born a slave herself,becoming a conductor of the Underground Railroad succeeding in leading slaves to freedom Harriet Tubman is a very important person in history of slavery. Harriet Tubman devoted her life towards the abolition of slavery.
