Harrison Bergeron Personal Responce
Harrison Bergeron Final Personal Response Growing up we are all told the direction of our paths- go to school, graduate, get a job, get married, have kids/grandkids, and finally, retire. It’s the inescapable reality that is forced upon us throughout our whole existence. As society we are forced into conventionalism, pushed towards a dream that we do not even necessarily desire, but since it is the ‘norm’ we conform to it out of lack of knowledge of the world. Just the thought of how many other millions of people there are in the world, and how miniscule we are in the grandee scheme of the world is quite over whelming. As Shakespeare said it: think of your life as if we are all actors in a play and we all have that one small role with one line to say. The majority of us would try to execute that line in the most powerful and prominent voice we could ever possibly muster, in hopes that the audience might notice us. Hoping, praying that we had made the play better with just that one line. With our lives we want to try and make a difference, to be noticed, but that rarely happens. Why? Because we are forced into being Orthodox, forced into being people that are way less then what we are capable of. We may have the most outstanding and brilliant ideas ever to be thought of but they will never be heard because we are taught that the average don’t make it ‘big’. How many of you personally know someone from your younger years that actually became famous for something positive, like stopping global warming? I’m going to go with next to none of you do. We are taught at a certain age that we should just give up on our dreams and ambitions and go after something more realistic- like an office job. Conformity not only leads us away from our full living potential that God but us on this earth for but also has numerous other constraints. These go all the way from letting the higher up in society win by being able to control us with a simple idea, to actually being sunned

The second most significant symbol in Harrison Bergeron is the beer. The beer is shown to the audience when George gets a beer from the refrigerator after the television tube burnt out. The author’s purpose for the beer is to show how people forget depressing losses to make them feel better. The beer symbolizes that forgetting things is a way used to cope with loss. This can be see in Harrison Bergeron when after George’s son dies it states “George had gone out into the kitchen for a can of beer” (Vonnegut 6). This happens after Harrison dies on the television so the main reason he went to the kitchen was to forget about the death of his son. Again this can be seen in Harrison Bergeron when George talks to Hazel,”"Something real sad on television."…

Because people only live once, they desire a happy and successful life, in other words, a “good life.” To complete this goal of a good life, a majority of society will do nearly everything possible to be comfortable and be happy. The extremes, which people go to in order to achieve what they think is necessary, are merely shadows, or illusions of reality that are believed to lead people to a good life. However, according to the prominent Greek philosopher, Plato, the good life is one in which individuals are not entirely comfortable and happy. The good life is one in which they are finding the ultimate truth and becoming open-minded, sometimes forcing them to oppose the norms of society, and escape the shadows. Though it is hard to do, people who abandon the “cave” of false reality and misinterpretation will live a true good life. The people who have escaped the cave have enlightened themselves by thinking…

Society, or “Mother Culture” as referred to by Ishmael, has countless ways of holding us back. “Mother Culture, whose voice has been in your ear since the day of your birth, has given you an explanation of how things came to be this way. You know it well; everyone in your culture knows it well…” (Page 40) In this sentence and the sentences after, Ishmael explains how none of us are really taught how we should act, we just pick up on it by watching our surroundings. Ideas about needing to go to college and get a great job are ideas that come from society. You don’t need to go to college to be successful but society makes us feel like in order to be successful, we need to go to college. We’ve been trained to believe that having years of school under our belts or a degree to hang on the wall will make us successful and in turn, make us happy. As humans, being at the top of the ecosystem and being free should make us happy in its own. But being free isn’t always what we think it is.…

What are the consequences of challenging societal expectations? This is a question that comes up often in everyday life. One typically runs into consequences when one defies society and does something different than the expected social norms. One may run into a consequence when challenging society shown in Ralph Waldo Emerson’s text, “Self-Reliance” and Jon Krakauer’s novel, Into the Wild. Both works are centered around defiance and they both consist of prime examples of consequences when one challenges societal expectations. Both authors provide examples that can be linked to the fact there will always be consequences when one challenges societal expectations, but they should not be taken to heart. In both “Self Reliance” and Into the Wild,…

Existence precedes and commands Essence. (Jean Paul Sartre) We regarded any situation as raw material for our joint efforts and not as a factor conditioning them: we imagined ourselves to be wholly independent agents. ... We had no external limitations, no overriding authority, no imposed pattern of existence, we created our own links with the world, and freedom was the very essence of our existence. (Simone de Beauvoir, 1963). Many people believe that freedom is something that you are given when you are born, and that you can do whatever you want. Most don’t relies that the people around them can affect the things they do. They chose not to believe it. Some think that if they are not in with the in crowd then they are inferior to society so they act deferent and that…

Quite simply, it is the natural order of things to grow and or expand. The best way for us to grow as people, and as individuals is to learn. The more we learn, the better we become, the better we become, the better we make the world for everyone that we come into contact with. A lot of people think that they can be of benefit to others by improving themselves for others. The thing they most often seem to miss is the fact that they can benefit others most by becoming the the best they can be for themselves. Therefore if you want to make life worthwhile for others, you must make it worthwhile for yourself. The only way to do this is to learn...…

The famous social worker THE MAHATMA of our country said a famous adage "BE THE CHANGE THAT YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD" for us to adhere. Change is not going to come if we wait for some other person, or if we are waiting for some other time we are the ones for whom we were waiting for, we are the change that we seek. One man is enough to cause a revolution in the world; MAHATMA abridged his thoughts in a single adage. Being a normal person one can become MAHATMA in life which not only be an acme for there life but also for this world. Mother Teresa said "I alone cannot change the world but can cast a stone which can cause many ripples in the water”, even one contribution can lead this world a step further towards success. Think about the people who are successful in this world. For examples, let's observe Mark Zuckerberg. He is the youngest billionaire in the world. He was focused, he was determined. In fact he was so passionate about programming that he dropped out of Harvard, the number one school in America. He used his talents, worked his choices and made Facebook. Not all of his choices were good. Some were actually bad; some choices actually got him into trouble with others.…

    What is a good life?

In today’s world, humans are often misled on what really is a good life. We are constantly shown through the television and magazines that being rich and famous is the way to go when it comes to a good life, when in truth many of them are miserable by problems that usually wouldn’t affect the common person. In truth there are only a few that are rich and famous and do achieve what can probably considered one of the greatest achievement’s by a man which is having a good life. In my opinion, the decision if someone has a good life or not is up to them and their will to strive for something better than average during the high school years of their life. The reason I feel like it begins at that age in their life is because at this point of anyone’s life they can determine their own future and strive for a better education if that’s what they want. When a person is born, whether they are born into royalty or in the slums, it is not their decision to choose which family they are born into, all they can do is try to the best for themselves and their future. Rather that person chooses a subjective lifestyle and strives to accomplish many goals, or an objective lifestyle and strive to own many material objects and the rich and famous lifestyle that many of us are manipulated to chase. It all begins in high school and with that persons will to put in the work necessary to get the results they want to receive in the future. If they put in no effort then they will receive no results, just like the philosophical expression that Parmenides used “Ex Nihillo Nihill Fit” (Of nothing, nothing comes). If one does decide to take the road to a higher level of knowing and learning, in the long run they will receive the prize for their hard work by potentially getting the job that won’t even feel like job, receiving the amount of money necessary to live a happy lifestyle , and potentially raising their chances of marriage which is statistically proven to make…

    What Is Sucess?

We, mostly referring to those, especially the young who have treaded the path filled with enigma and decisions to be made must eventually come to a halt, where the paths to success and failure lie. The fruits of success lay right before our eyes but yet out of reach. However, the devastation of failure seems so far away but is no further than a stone’s throw away. And what is success? Many of us, mainly those who are working see success as having great wealth and power, however, some see success in different ways. For example, some see having a good relationship with someone as success, some see success in helping the needy, some see success as being happy, and some even see it in having time to enjoy the little things. Considering the fact that I’m still a teenager and have not any plans for building up a family, success in my eyes is obtaining a relatively good status in society. It is better in my view to aim high initially because we will not be able to return to the past with our mea culpa. The road to success is like a busy highway, if you stop suddenly, you might get involved in an accident. Just like our lives, everything is fast paced and many of us find it painfully difficult to adapt to this kind of life. Some are not audacious enough to attempt and therefore discouraged by the stress and adversity that is to be faced in the future. Besides that, many of us happen to be victims of indolence and having the ‘Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ personality. Our unwilling and pious actions constantly draw us away from our goals. Think of our lives as a game of soccer, only without the goal posts. We would be like dogs without a leash, and sheep without a Sheppard, wandering aimlessly with no purpose at all. Now a game of soccer with the goal posts, on reflection to our lives, we set goals easily just as a soccer player sees the goal posts, but it requires lots of effort and discipline to score a goal as well as to succeed. Everything has pros and cons but not…
