Harry Potter Chronology Essay

Chronology is a term used to define a series of events and their time periods in which they occur in a piece of work such as literature, poetry or films/television series. The term Chronological order is used to define a piece of work which follows a specific timeline and does not deviate majorly. A good example of chronology in a piece of literature is the ‘Harry Potter’ book series written by J. K. Rowling. This series follows the protagonist from the age of 11-18 and only deviates with the use of flashbacks to give more depth to the plot and the story. A good example of a cinematic piece that does not use chronology is the ‘Edge of tomorrow’. The protagonist in this piece repeats the same day over and over so we therefore do not move forward
The genre of the piece gives an understanding of what to expect from the said piece even before we have seen or heard what it is. Music has many genres which cover a broad range of areas from classical to hip-hop or country to dubstep. The Genre is defined by what is included in it for example I would instantly know I was listening to rap if I saw Eminem’s name on the front like I would also recognise that I was listening to rock if I saw ACDC on the album cover. As much as the genre defines the music, the music defines the genre. This can be seen in cinematic pieces as we have another huge range of genres stretching from horror to comedies. They are very different genres and as we have classified them separately we are able to choose which one we want to view. This categorization makes choices much easier and it enables us to order a huge range of topics very simply. Each genre has a typical theme in all art forms such as horror will generally have scary characters whereas comedies will have funny characters. Overall it is clear that genres are crucial to defining the art form and through the use of genres we are easily able to see what we like and dislike.
