Uniforms: School and Beyond School is a place to acquire the necessary skills needed to become a productive member of society. Implementation of school uniform policy could be a way to build discipline, structure, and integrity in students. School uniforms provide an atmosphere where students can focus on their education rather than fixating on the latest fashion trends. Children should not have to mature in a society based on superficial things. Debates are spreading like wildfire on whether school uniforms should be mandatory in public schools. While most private schools have implemented school uniforms, they have just begun to emerge in public schools across the nation. School uniforms provide adolescents with uniformity, while maturing them in finding their own identity. Uniforms are a cost efficient way to avoid the back to school blow that parents take yearly. A universal school uniform allows parents to focus on other school supplies instead of clothing. School uniforms can also reduce school bullying. Often times, children are miss treated when they do not fit in with their peers. Having school uniforms can elleviate the stress factors associated with dressing with the latest and greatest designer wear. Regulations mandating school uniforms need to be established across the nation.
Firstly, school bullying is dramatically reduced when schools require their students to wear uniforms. Long Beach school officials claim that violence, and discipline problems dropped dramatically after the implementation of the uniform requirement (Rockney par. 6). School uniforms are not only essential in maintaining order, but necessary to prevent serious incidents from happening in this nation’s schools. M.D. Randy Rockney, a Professor of Pediatrics at the Brown medical school reveals, overall school crime declined by 36%, fights and weapons offenses by 32%, sex offenses by 74%, suspensions by 32%, and vandalism by 18% when uniforms were implemented in Long Beach(Rockney par 6). Students perform better academically when they feel safe from threats of violence. By Minimizing social economic distractions, students obtain the ability to achieve academic success. Surveys of tearchers in Dade County indicate that a majority of teachers and principals believe that requiring school uniforms would reduce violence and discipline problems (Rodney par 6). President Bill Clinton suggest, school uniforms are one solution to gang-related behavioral problems in large metropolitan areas (Brunsma 1).
Uniforms promotes academic motivation in students. A qualitative study reveals a greater sense of student respect, and a “sense of belonging” after Garfield School in Stockton, California, initiated a school uniform policy (Huss 2). Students are motivated when they have many commonalities with each other. Mr. Davis, a school teacher, admits an increase in school spirit and enthusiasm for the school (Huss 5). Ms. Barry, a school teacher, confirms this by stating “My kids sit up and pay attention. They’re quiet. I think the school takes on a quieter, studious atmosphere.” Teachers perceived an increase in the level of respect, caring, and trust demonstrated throughout the school after the implementation of the school uniform policy (Huss 5). Students respond positively towards uniformity.
School uniforms are cheaper than back to school clothing. Thousands of dollars are spent yearly on back to school clothing, and supplies. Parents struggle enough providing three square meals a day, and the essentials needed to attend school. School uniforms help to eliminate stress on low income homes. No longer will parents feel obligated to buy their children designer clothing. Britain even gets uniform items at a discounted rate because of competition (Walmsley par. 4). A Britain parent has purchased school required uniforms for close to nothing “At a recent school fair (carnival) at my children’s school, used items were about 75 cents per item” (Walmsley par.4). Schools are trying their very best to make sure that uniforms are cheap, and affordable for all families. This helps families to become financially secure, and able to spend their money on different required items. Jackson 4
In conclusion, school uniforms will highly benefit society. Reducing problematic issues such as school bullying in adolescents. With less children troubled with bullying, the youth will be prepared for a productive adulthood. Having mandated school uniforms makes for a highly motivated group of adolescants. These young children are the future, and their success is necessary for the success this nation in the future. Students will be able to focus and provide fresh ideas for innovation. Parents will also enjoy saving thousands that would have normally been spent on clothing attire. Parents should not be forced to buy all of these expensive items each year. School uniforms alleviate many problems, and are necessary for success. Federal mandates on school uniforms must be implemented.
