The seed sizes are small in Hass avocados which means that it has a large percentage of flesh that can be used after the skin has been peeled. This brand of avocados came about when a man named Rudolph Hass purchased an avocado seedling in 1935 and graphed it into his very own species. I’ve been eating a lot of avocado lately. They’ve been on offer in the supermarket (though still excruciatingly expensive), so I’ve been buying about 4 at a time. Most of the time I just have them smooshed inside a pitta bread with some salt and pepper (like avocado toast but betterrrr because it stays nice and warm), but this time I decided to do something a bit more exciting. Just cut them into chunks, bread them, bake them, and voila – crunchy coating but soft and creamy inside…

Throughout time, slavery made a near-permanent mark on America. With that mark came the marks of brutal beatings and even to the extreme of impressions of nooses left around lynching victims necks. The practice of lynching began in South Carolina in the late 1760s as the country’s first notable move toward vigilantism. By the 1800’s lynching became known as the “lynch law”. Lynching was actually legal and something whites gathered together for and enjoyed as a sport. White people enjoyed lynching blacks all together. Whites would have their kids in attendance to watch a black person die from being lynched and the white kids enjoyed they thought it was quite entertaining. At that time and age kids should be disgusted with seeing a human hanged from a rope and cutting their genitals off. The components of lynching changed considerably. It also became a method of administering punishment to people whose behavior was not socially acceptable. Examples were men who beat their wives or failed to provide for their families, or women who did not or women who did not live up to community standards of lady hood, could expect a visit from local groups of white cappers or lynches‘. However lynching was not the first option of punishment to slaves. They actually were punished on their plantation thus providing immediate enforcement on their rules to the control to the black population and reducing the need for formal law enforcement.…

Jazz music has always existed as a voice for black musicians and audiences. The sounds and rhythms are extremely unique and colorful. It certainly changed America in the 1920's with the swing movement and it put jazz on the map. During this time many white people started to be influenced by this infectious music, and started to enjoy it. Many white people also discriminated against blacks and treated them as less than equal. A goal for an artist named Billie Holiday was to make America listen to the cries of a black man, a black man who was just lynched. Jazz music had to be recognized with its roots. Billie Holiday believed Jazz music had to defend the black people. No better way of being heard than through the voice of Holiday. She attempted to fight for black rights through her song “ strange fruit”, a political song that struck a chord for many Americans.…

Unless an American citizen is a Native American, he or she is part of a great country filled with immigrants. Those who came before us, our ancestors, came here from every corner of this small world. There was a time, and it was not so long ago, when America’s motto was “give us your tired and weak” etc. We embraced immigrants that sought a new life here. That, however, is no longer the case as the problem of illegal immigration, which has rapidly spread across this country, has seen the end our open arms philosophy. One of the problems with the American attitude is that none of us have ever had to experience what immigrants experience every day. Many see us as either a salad bowl where all of our ethnic experiences mix together but at the same time accent each other. Others see us as the proverbial melting pot where our ethnic experiences meld and mix together. As far as the civil rights issues that face our nation, both of these stances help us understand the plight of the immigrant.…
