I recently reread the book "Hatchet", by Gary Paulsen, and realized that it does not take much to survive. In this book a young man by the name of Brian was on his way to see his dad when his single engine plane went down. The only things Brian had was a hatchet, and a little hut that he had built. Today people think that you need the newest stuff and premade food. In this book Brian shows not only the public but the military that he can survive with one tool.…
This is my INS on Hatchet. The book was written by Gary Paulsen the author that also wrote previous book I did an INS on. The book is set in the Canadian woods. I'm not sure what time period this book takes place in because it doesn't say in the book. I'm guessing somewhere in the 1980's or 90's. Now I will summarize the story of this book. The story is about Brian Robeson, a 13 year old boy who is going to visit his dad in Canada after his parents' divorce. He goes from Hampton, New York to Canada on a small plane. The driver has a heart attack and dies. Brian takes over the controls and crashes into the woods. Brian is now stranded all by himself in these woods. He thinks that he will be rescued, but that doesn’t end up happening. He finds berries and other types of foods and uses those to eat. Skip all the way to the end and a tornado strikes his area and destroys his shelter. After that, he notices that the tail of the plane has emerged and he goes into it and gets the survival pack. In it, he finds a transmitter and it calls a rescue helicopter thing to him. He then gets rescued. That is pretty much bigger main parts of the book. I chose this book for INS because I said that there are some similar things about this book and the one I did previously and that interested me so I decided to do this book for my ins. I also wanted to read this book again because I forgot some of the stuff that happens throughout the book.…

In the novel Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen the theme is survival of the fittest. In Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen the book binds you to continue reading it until the very end. It like you are there with Brian and had a very descriptive image what it would look like standing next to him. “ A book is a magical thing that lets you travel to far-away places without leaving your chair” - Katrina Mayer. The plot of Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen is very interesting because of how you could imagine yourself right next to Brian like a seeing everything he sees.…

There is hope of survival. Brian is somewhere in the forests of Ontario or Quebec, in a region called the Canadian Shield. Carved out by glaciers long ago, the region is made up of ancient granite rock. It extends, in a horseshoe shape, from the southern edge of the Arctic Islands, around Hudson Bay, and over to the eastern coast of Newfoundland. The climate in the northern part of the Canadian Shield is extremely cold, with average temperatures in July ranging from forty to fifty degrees. Luckily Brian was there when it wasn’t there when it was extremely cold ,or it would be very hard to survive with snow so deep and no game. He starts to hunt.…

Brian, a thirteen year old boy, had to get on a plane to visit his dad. Everything was going great. The pilot had even taught Brian how to steer the plane. Brian was not hating the flight as much as he thought, that is, until the pilot died from a heart attack mid flight. Brian crash-landed into a lake in the middle of the forest with nothing but a hatchet, which was a gift from his mother. He had to learn to survive, to get food, water, and a good shelter, but the main thing he had to focus on was being rescued.…
In the book Soldier’s Heart by Gary Paulsen, the main character, Charley, sees some awful things. There are many down falls to war, and the imagery is one of them. Some soldiers aren’t strong enough to take the emotional hit that follows it. You go through battle daily and see people being shot, but the aftermath is worse than watching people fall, clinging to life by a thread, if they haven’t already died. They stab, shoot and claw…
We face choices each and everyday of our life, these choices define who we are and who we become, and each of these choices have a cost, if chocolate is chosen over vanilla then vanilla is lost. For every choice there is a consequence and a beneficial factor, the decision is presented and the question is are the consequences of our actions minimal enough that they may be overlooked? The story NightJohn by Gary Paulsen tells the story of a young girl and her so called family in the midst of slavery, the girl's name is Sarny and she desires knowledge but in such a time as slavery the cost for knowledge is extremely high, as high as death sometimes. The choice is presented, that decision must be made, is the risk worth the reward? Do the pros outweigh the cons?…
Dear Gary Paulsen: The first time I read Hatchet was when I was in the fourth grade. I have always liked survival stories and Hatchet made me really about how fast our world can be turned upside down. I really appreciate the section when Brian tells how his teacher, Perpich, told him to "stay positive and stay on top of things" and "You are your most valuable asset. Don't forget that. You are the best thing you have.…
Gary Paulsen’s novel is a story of a battle between a boy and the nature that’s against him. When Brian first arrives in the woods after the plane crash, the setbacks he experiences frustration in his journey of survival. He cries and despairs, and he gives in to self-pity and hopelessness. However, he soon learns what he considers the most important rule of survival. That is self-pity, rather than accomplishing anything only wastes time and energy that could be spent working and getting something done in the time you were thinking about the situation. A new attitude “new Brian”, combined with improved powers of observation, patience and a degree of luck, enable Brian to survive his time in the wilderness.…
