Hate Crimes
Crimes of hatred or racism, today our system is working to prevent these crimes and bring forth justice to those who committed them. “Instead of placing the blame on the teenager, we need to place the blame on the responsible adult. There were two people involved. We had an adult who was chasing a kid, and we had a kid who I feel was afraid.” Sybrina Fulton, Mother of Trayvon Martin. Her son 17 years of age was being targeted because of his physical appearance and his life has been taken away. According to the article (Introduction to What Is a Hate Crime? At Issue) states the victim is chosen not because of what he or she has done or might do to the perpetrator. They are chosen because they share some characteristic with a larger group that enrages the perpetrator for reasons that may have nothing to do with the actual victim. Hate crimes imply an underlying, clearly recognized crime, from simple vandalism to brutal murder. Ida B. Wells “The negro has suffered far more from the commission of this crime against the women of his race by white men than the white race has ever suffered through his crimes.” For instance we all have heard the name Trayvon Martin, the unarmed black teen shot by a man on neighborhood watch in Sanford, Fla. This is clearly a proven case where the victim was targeted by his/her physical appearance. According to the article (Hate crimes are not like other crimes) hate crimes differ from other crimes in that they target a whole community as opposed to just an individual victim hate crime sends a message that an individual and “their kind” will not be tolerated, many times leaving the victim and others in their group feeling isolated, vulnerable and unprotected.
