T: Julia Russo and Linds Hawaiian Anchialine Pools: ʻŌpae ʻUla
The ʻōpae ʻula and the Hawaiian anchialine pools have been a large part of Hawaii’s environment. We chose this topic because we wanted to learn about a Hawaiian species because we were both raised in Hawaii, and that the ʻōpae ʻula is endemic to Hawaii. We chose to do a poster board so we could reflect and make the things that we say easy to remember. In the Waianapanapa Cave, people are putting guppies and other invasive species into the pool, and they are driving the ʻōpae ʻula towards the back of the cave, this is a negative environmental issue. ʻŌpae ʻula means Red Shrimp, when translated into English. ʻŌpae ʻulas can grow up to the size of 1.5 centimeters. The anchialine pools are a unique type of tidepools that have brackish water. Brackish water is a mix of salt and fresh water. Anchialine means lava in Hawaiian and Latin, since the walls of the pools are made of hardened lava. The ancient Hawaiians different uses for the ʻōpae ʻula. One of them was that they would catch an ʻōpae and take it out to sea and use it as bait to catch fish, most likely the ʻōpelu. A young princess named Popoalaea married a warrior chief, Kakae. Over time, Kakae became suspicious that she was unfaithful to him, and made her life miserable. With her servant friend, she fled.
