In “The fault in our stars”, the change in relationship between Hazel and Augustus is a very unique bond from being further apart to getting closer, where they understand each other very well, through the use of literary devices in the book.
At the start, the relationship between Hazel and Augustus is somewhat of romantic attraction as they liked each other the first time they saw each other. “I glanced again and he was still watching me.” The word “still” denotes a continuous action. This shows that Augustus was attracted to Hazel for a reason hence watching her for a long period of time. While talking on the topic of going on dates with her mom, she said “I’m like.Like.I’m a grenade,Mom.I’m a grenade and at some point I’m going to blow up and I would like to minimize the casualties, okay?” The word “grenade” denotes a small bomb. This connotes that Hazel think one day she would just pass away suddenly .The phrase “minimize the casualties” denotes less people getting hurt. This suggest that Hazel did not one to add more people that she would hurt emotionally when she loses her fight to cancer and eventually pass away. The repetition of the word “im like” shows that hazel was stammering when she was speaking which shows her lack of confidence ,which strongly emphasizes that she was afraid that she would make a mess
When the nurse asked Hazel why she wouldn’t ask about her boyfriend , she answered she did not have but the nurse said “Well there’s a kid who has hardly left the waiting room since you got here.”The word “hardly” denotes very rarely, which suggests that Augustus cared for Hazel so much that he put aside all the things he had to do and waited for her the entire time she was in ICU barely moving around. This shows how important Hazel is to Augustus and how much he cared for her during her tough time, ensuring she was coping well. This supports the theme where friendship can bring you through hard

The speaker of the “Hazel tells LaVerne” story repeats the line “me a princess,” indicating that her bluster is just a front for her dreams. The word choice and humorous tone of Machan’s story also reveal much about Hazel’s personality and position. The ways she uses slang, replacement of spellings, and the neglect of punctuation, a reader learn a great deal about the character, and also it shows that she has no or little of education.…

    2. Hazel considers An Imperial Affliction "so special and rare that advertising your affection for it feels like a betrayal." Why is it Hazel's favorite book? Why is it so important that she and Gus learn what happens after its heroine dies? Have you ever felt the same way about a book as Hazel does—that it is too special to talk about? I think it was her favorite book because she could relate to it. I think it's important for them because then they could have an idea about what will happen after they die. I have felt the same way about a book before.…

Hazel’s side-effect-of-cancer depression leads to classes at The Heart of Jesus where she meets Augustus Waters. She’s hesitant to begin a relationship with Gus, a boy she’s shocked even talks to her, because of her self proclaimed status as a ‘grenade’. One day, she will detonate, leaving her parents, Augustus, and the lives of everyone else she touched broken. Her journey is one of realization: realizing that she doesn’t have control over those who love her (Augustus: “It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you”), realizing that she isn’t the sole reason that anyone is alive (her mom has secretly been taking classes), and realizing that there is too much wonder in the world and in Being a Person to worry about the damage one inflicts on people by dying.…

In the book, Hazel arrives to Augustus's house but her and her mother heard crying and Augustus scream. "As we approached the house, I could hear someone crying inside" (Green 249). In the film it only shows Hazel and her mom arriving to Augustus's house and he brings his stuff into the car without the incident in the book. Another part that was in the book that wasn't in the film was when Hazel was at the support group in church. "After I finished, there was quite a long period of silence as I watched a smile spread all the way across Augustus's face- not the little crooked smile of the boy trying to be sexy while he stared at me, but his real smile, too big for his face. Augustus is also troubled many times throughout the book, when there’s something Hazel has trouble with or is restricting for her. One example of this would be the journey up the stairs of the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam, he is frustrated that he can not do anything to help her and that puts a toll on his emotions. There are many things in their relationship that effects both of them emotionally, but it is worth while for them, because their love is unconditional. Augustus says, “Pain demands to be felt”(57).
