(Darrell Lynn Grace, 2011).There is twenty four million Americans that have Diabetes Mellitus, and ninety five percent have type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetes is a group of diseases that is caused by high levels of blood glucose and is caused by defects in insulin production. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. There are a few different types of Diabetes, There is type 1, which used to be called juvenile diabetes and is caused by the body’s immune system attacking and destroying its own insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas. Type 1 accounts for about five percent while type 2 accounts for around ninety to ninety five percent of all diagnosed cases (Services, 2011). Type 2 will occur when the body cannot use the insulin produced effectively or does not produce enough insulin and usually happens in adults over the age of forty but is becoming more common for younger age groups. Gestational diabetes happens during pregnancy. When a women has gestational diabetes during pregnancy she than has a thirty five to sixty percent …show more content…
In 2002 approximately $132 billion was spent on diabetes and $174 billion in 2007 (Darrell Lynn Grace, 2011). Diabetes can cause kidney disease, heart disease, blindness and foot problems that can lead to amputations. Diabetes will cause damage to capillary endothelial cells of the retina, mesangial cells of glomeruli in the kidneys, and neurons and Schwann cells of peripheral nerves. Obesity is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Diabetes causes plaque buildup by damaging the lining of arterial walls, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in diabetes
