Unfortunately, there is a commonality that each treatment provider is faced with a client that only has one single issue. However, in this example, the client has more than one issue ranging from substance abuse to mental illness to homelessness. The provider will then need to determine if the client will need additional assistance with other issues that may be outside our scope of practice. For example, if the provider is working in a substance abuse treatment program the primary focus is helping the client to stop using drugs and/ or alcohol. As the client is no longer supposed to use substances or drink, the client can no longer reside in an environment where substances and/or alcohol are being used; this can become a trigger for the client and risk the client’s sobriety and recovery. This client is now homeless and will need assistance with housing. As the client continues in sobriety the treatment provider may notice that the client appears to be struggling with mental health issues that have not been previously diagnosed; this client will now need to be referred to a mental health provider for further evaluation and possible medication management. The provider has been made aware of these arising situations through communication and effective listening skills while interacting with the client in the group and individual therapy process. The provider will need to be aware of the client’s verbal and non-verbal cues as the clients’ affect may be incongruent with the current situation. The provider will also need to be aware of the client’s cultural issues as treatment may cause the client to have stigmatization within his or her family…

How does this client manage sexual abuse, child abuse, delinquency and crime? None of these must be taken lightly. If a child is bullied, the social worker and the police will be included. The social worker will is required to visit the victim and his or her family. If abuse is proven, therefore, the child will be terminated from the house and placed in a foster home. The parents will now lose custody and be charged with child neglect in the appropriate procedures. Sexual abuse is also gravely serious. When a report regarding sexual abuse happens, the police are also included. The criminal is charged and arrested into custody. If it is a child, they can be provided advice, counseling and regular checkups. Crime is also managed in a common way. The courts and police will be included, therefore the time is provided to the person who committed the crime. It revolves on the graveness of the crime itself. This system also offers delinquency prevention classes and organizes funding for the classes (Macro Practice In Social Work,…

During the Spring 2013 semester, I was granted the opportunity to intern at Denton County Juvenile Probation. This institution is responsible for delinquent juveniles that have committed a criminal act. The institution consists of several departments: intake, the court, detention, the POST adjudication program, and JJAEP (Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program). My intern experience consisted of working with juveniles placed in the Courage to Change (CTC) POST adjudication, which is a diversion program of the Texas Juvenile Detention Department (TJJD). However, while interning, I was able to experience the many facets of the juvenile justice system, from the juveniles’ entry into Denton County Juvenile Detention Center, all the way to their release from the Courage to Change program and their re-entry back into society. For the majority of my time as an intern, I worked under the caseworkers in the CTC program, which managed the majority of casework load for each juvenile that was sentenced to the program. The daily activities that I performed while interning included: filing of room checks, group work, and case file information, while also helping the caseworkers fulfill any code greens (memos to the caseworkers from the residents for needed materials or to notify them of any information).…

“Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed and unable to meet constant demands. Unarguably, drug courts are specialized courts that are intended to manage adult, nonviolent offenders suffering from substance abuse issues. Thus, drug court integrates an extremely supervised drug treatment program as an alternative to regular sentencing from the court. Characteristics of drug court include the timely identification and placement of suitable applicants, drug treatment with concise goals and regulations, a cooperative approach, a monitoring of asceticism, jurisdictional participation and interaction with the applicants, and a team methodology in which probation officers, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and treatment therapists coordinate their efforts. In addition, offenders that complete the program efficaciously…

There are many positive aspects to having specialized courts. Courts of healing justice provide an informal setting as compared to those of general courts. By having informal hearings it hopes to seem compassionate to the needs of the individual (Paulsen, 1966). It is the mission of these courts to focus on what is in the best interest of the person needing the help they can give them (Yermish, 2009). The courts can use the law to order treatment for the offender (Davis, 2003). Specialty courts can arrange for treatment when social services have been unable to do so, thus making court the last resort in the effort to obtain help for the offender (Davis, 2003). Not only do they serve to take away some of the over-crowding of the general courts; they keep personal problems from being exposed in general courts (Davis, 2003).…

AA or NA meetings are still a requirement; court hearings are cutback to bi-weekly visits and probation officer meetings go to once a month. In this phase however, clients begin to concentrate on “life skills, especially those involving housing, education, employment, and transportation” (Wolfers, 2006). In addition, clients will need to take care of all court costs and fees before they can move on to the next phase…
