He Fell Among Thieves – Sir Henry Newbolt Analysis
He fell among Thieves – Sir Henry Newbolt

‘Ye have robb’d,’ said he, ‘ye have slaughter’d and made an end,

Prisoner is speaking to the Guard/his capturer, telling him what he thinks about the genocide, and completely destroyed there enemy

Take your ill-got plunder, and bury the dead:

“Ill-got” – acquired by evil, dishonest means
“Plunder” – robbed valuables, to rob of goods by force.
Prisoner is telling the guard to take back his possessions (the prisoners obviously got caught stealing possessions from the enemy)
“Bury the dead” – once he’s retrieved all the possessions the prisoners will die and get buried

What will ye more of your guest and sometime friend?’

What are you going to do with me? What you going to do with all of us?

‘Blood for our blood,’ they said.

Senses of Revenge, the prisoners are getting killed, just as the prisoners killed the men of the enemy.

He laugh’d: ‘If one may settle the score for five,

The prisoners still abrasive/cocky in the face of death.
“If one may settle the score for five” – Saying that for every 5 enemies, one prisoner would die, stating that his country killed more, and died less.

I am ready; but let the reckoning stand till day:
I have loved the sunlight as dearly as any alive.’
‘You shall die at dawn,’ said they.

Hes ready to die, but he wants to see one more sunrise before he dies.
“Reckoning” - The action or process of calculating or estimating something

He flung his empty revolver down the slope,

He was captured because he ran out of bullets, and couldn’t defend himself.

He climb’d alone to the Eastward edge of the trees;

He wanted a better view of the sunrise

All night long in a dream untroubled of hope
He brooded, clasping his knees.

He knew he was going to die, he accepted his fate, and so his thoughts didn’t contain any hope.
“He brooded, clasping his knees” Portrays the image of the prisoners thought process.

He did not hear the monotonous roar that

As men ordained on a mission, Glanton's Gang is paid to seek out the scalps of Apaches and return them to the Mexican town of Chihuahua City. The gang quickly moves beyond the killing of Indians to include Mexicans, Americans, and whoever else crosses their path. The men are killing on their own accord. The excessive killing at first seems to be driven by greed. The senselessness of the deaths leads to the conclusion these men kill for power. Blood-thirsty and without the bounds of written law, Glanton's Gang become warriors, just like the Apaches they set out to kill. As Judge Holden explains to the gang around the campfire, war has always existed and will always exist. Every thing that exists is contained in war. By the Judge's theory, the actions of the gang are inherent. War is a natural occurrence and the men are merely acting naturally. War is a game. Throughout the story, death is treated as a game. While members of the gang die, the group continues, barely taking notice another man has been lost. Yet, the only real control the characters have over their lives is death. On the harsh plains, the only thing certain is death. Other occurrences are merely incidental or random. In essence the group treats death like a game; with no value on the fallen, only placing importance on the living.…

I didn’t feel a thing for him, didn’t think that much about what I was doing. I just waited for the corporal’s order. The prisoner was simply another rebel who was responsible for the death of my family, as I had come to truly believe. The corporal gave the signal with a pistol shot and I grabbed the man’s head and slit his throat in one fluid motion. His Adam’s apple made way for the sharp knife, and I turned the bayonet on its zigzag…

This passage reminds me of the scene where Napoleon steals the milk and apples from the animals without asking in Animal Farm. Similarly, in The Book Thief, Rudy and Liesel are also stealing vegetables from many farms. However, the reason that Napoleon steals the milk and apples is because of his greed, while Rudy and Liesel are stealing to "extend their thieving repertoire" (Zusak 161). Also, from my interpretation of this passage, I feel that the law enforcements are not strong enough to stop thievery at that time in Germany because, if the law enforcements were powerful, then Rudy and Liesel wouldn't take the risk to extend their thieving…
