Disadvantages to ObamaCare

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's explore the five freedoms that Americans would lose under Obamacare:

1. Freedom to choose what's in your plan

The bills in both houses require that Americans purchase insurance through "qualified" plans offered by health-care "exchanges" that would be set up in each state. The rub is that the plans can't really compete based on what they offer. The reason: The federal government will impose a minimum list of benefits that each plan is required to offer.

Today, many states require these "standard benefits packages" -- and they're a major cause for the rise in health-care costs. Every group, from chiropractors to alcohol-abuse counselors, do lobbying to get included. Connecticut, for example, requires reimbursement for hair transplants, hearing aids, and in vitro fertilization.

The Senate bill would require coverage for prescription drugs, mental-health benefits, and substance-abuse services. It also requires policies to insure "children" until the age of 26. That's just the starting list. The bills would allow the Department of Health and Human Services to add to the list of required benefits, based on recommendations from a committee of experts. Americans, therefore, wouldn't even know what's in their plans and what they're required to pay for, directly or indirectly, until after the bills become law.

2. Freedom to be rewarded for healthy living, or pay your real costs

As with the previous example, the Obama plan enshrines into federal law one of the worst features of state legislation: community rating. Eleven states, ranging from New York to Oregon, have some form of community rating. In its

    Pros and Cons of Obamacare

Obamacare is an extensive bill that completely transforms the healthcare system. The main part of the bill is the individual mandate that requires all citizens and legal immigrants to have health care coverage. If individuals do not have health insurance by 2014 there is a monetary penalty. In order to allow many Americans to obtain coverage, it outlines a major change in insurance practice in that companies are no longer allowed to deny individuals health insurance because of pre-existing conditions; individuals are able to buy into health insurance at anytime. Obamacare expands Medicaid for those who cannot afford health insurance; the expansion will supply more than 17 million more Americans with health insurance than before the bill. People who are employed can fulfill this health insurance requirement by enrolling in their employer’s plan. Health insurance must be provided through employers if the company has 10 or more employees. Small businesses will be subsidized so that they can afford to provide insurance. People without insurance through their employer will be able to buy plans through health insurance exchanges, where most will qualify for subsidies, greatly reducing the premiums. Exchanges are run by the state or non-profit organizations and require that all insurance companies offer certain plans that make it easier for Americans to determine the differences between…

The Affordable Care Act will cut the number of uninsured Americans by more than half. The insurance coverage will cover ninety-four percent of the American population, which reduces about thirty one million uninsured people. One of the substantial changes to our health care system includes having individuals carry health insurance and prohibiting insurers from denying health insurance coverage due to preexisting condition. It will change the focus of our nation’s health care system from treating sick people to prevention, increasing access to care and ensuing quality health care for everyone.…

Obamacare is a federal statute that represents the most significant government expansion and regulatory overhaul of the United States healthcare system. Obamacare will increase healthcare costs tremendously. A positive to it is that it will provide over thirty million uninsured Americans with healthcare. Obamacare will affect businesses, especially small businesses by cutting their hours and jobs. It may also prevent them from providing their employees with health benefits. Obamabcare will also affect Medicare and Medicaid with budget cuts of around $ 716,000,000, a tax increase, and also increase the cost of medications. Health insurance exchange will be set up to try to organize the programs and offer different choices for health care plans. Overall, Obamacare will affect people that already have insurance by making their costs continue to rise.…

The alternatives for the previous information listed, are hard to decipher, because everything associated with the reform of health care is a sensitive and time-consuming situation. Individuals should have the option if they want health care or not. Some individuals either cannot afford it at the current time or they just do not want insurance for some personal reason. They should not be forced into purchasing a insurance plan or be faced with a penalty, that will affect their next tax refund if they choose not to pay it. United State citizens have the constitutional right to choose what is best for themselves and their families, without putting others in harms way. From an ethical standpoint, you have to see or hear both sides of the story. From the government’s perspective, they have their reasons for wanting all qualified citizens to have access to insurance. From the individual’s standpoint they have their personal believes, that will lead them to their final decision. The government should give the individuals the choice, without being penalized. The individuals will have to deal with the consequences of not having health insurance, when they need it, because it is their decision. We also have to stay up to date on the change of policies, with the new president elected. Things could slowly or…

The U.S. Appeals Court in Atlanta has already deemed the passing of this act as unconstitutional (Brent, 2011). It is a contested issue on which the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments in the coming weeks. Another appeals court in Virginia has stated that legally, this matter should be revisited when taxpayers are made to pay penalties, in the next three years (Savage, 2011). This brings into question the constitutionality of this act and the fact remains that there is far from universal agreement over this. An important argument raised by opponents is that the passing of this law would open way for unrestricted powers to the Federal government. It is argued that this mandate would be structured like a tax, hence making it legitimate for the Federal government to impose on us. Furthermore, that health insurance is a type of interstate commerce, is another argument cited by the law’s proponents ("Obamacare" 2010). However, this would set a landmark precedent which may become a threat to the liberties we cherish in this nation.…

“Not only did consumers see price increases, many found that their doctor or hospital was no longer in the network, as plans employed narrow network strategies to try to keep costs under control. Some existing plans disappeared entirely as carriers withdrew from an unattractive marketplace, or in the case of many federally-financed co-ops like Health Republic Insurance of New York, one of the state’s largest individual plan insurers, simply went out of business due to substantial underwriting losses.” (USA today 1) It will even increase the medical cost in the U.S as a whole and people who have ordinary commercial insurance are required to pay extra either insurance companies or directly for hospital or medical…

In the year 2010, former President Barrack Obama proposed a law that would have the objective of increasing the amount of insured Americans. The law, Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also referred to as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare, set policies that are meant to protect the rights and health of the general population and are a clear form of government involvement in health care. This law acted in response to the lack of coverage of many insurance providers. Despite the possible rise in premiums that would result from Obamacare, government involvement in health care should continue due to the increase in the insured population of Americans and the protection it provides to consumers.…

A few years ago, there was an announcement about a new health insurance in the United States, which is called Obamacare. President Barack Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act into law on March 20, 2010. Obamacare is a nickname for the set of health care reform rules found in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Obamacare has indeed reduced the number of Americans without insurance. This insurance has two big declared goals to reduce the number of Americans who lack health insurance and to cut health spending that doesn't give good value for money, because it makes health care services affordable and accessible to almost everyone. According to the US government, Obamacare “helps to increase the number of primary care physicians, nurses, physician assistants and other health care professionals." As with the health care industry as a whole, for many years market forces had little or no impact on the health care workforce. That is, the supply side often dominated, controlling the numbers and types of workers that were available (Shi & Singh,…
