1. In the article “The Perils of Higher Education” Steven Kolter argues that college offers the opportunity to learn and obtain a degree but advertises the type of environment that promotes unhealthy eating habits, unreasonable alcohol consumption, sleep deprivation and bad habits.
2. Two important facts the author uses to support his main idea are “A Tufts University survey found that 50 percent of students eat too much fat, and 70 to 80 percent eat too much saturated fat” and “Forty-four percent of today’s collegiate drink enough to be classifies as binge drinkers, according to a nationwide survey of 10,000 students done at Harvard University”.
3. You are the author of your own story. Every day you make choices which reflect your character and build your habits. For example, we all make the choice as to what time we decide to get up and start our day. Likewise there are consequences if we decide to wake up late and miss something on our agenda. Steven Kolter argues that although college offers the proper education to prepare people for the adult life it also promotes unhealthy eating habits, unreasonable alcohol consumption etc. habits. Kolter states in his main idea that college is what prepares young adults for the adult world which teaches students time management, career skills, and good studying habits, allowing them to face new challenges and become dedicated to work hard and obtain a degree. Kolter later argues how getting enough sleep is a critical factor to obtaining knowledge and how college promotes sleep deprivation, but that is a part of the learning process. Students are meant to learn how to manage their time properly, become disciplined, and make sacrifices, which will improve their sleeping habits and better their opportunities to
