Health Care Interview
Glencoe Nursing Home is the setting where I done my interview on a full-time management employee, Sybil Harmon she is the manager of the nursing staff.
Sybil’s primary duties include training the new nurses that are coming in, scheduling, paperwork, and taking care of the patients just to name a few of her jobs description. She gives patients their medicines, she put in IVs, catheters, and make sure that the patients’ need are met. Ms. Harmon is not only the manager, but she is a licensed professional when she started out she worked as a nurse assistance and she did not have to be certified and now to work as a nurse assistance you have to be certified and go for training to do the job, now it is called Certified Nursing Assistance (CNA) and you has to take a state test to be certified. Ms. Harmon went to school in Talladega, Al where she got her license for LPN and she has worked many nursing homes from Alabama to Panama City, Florida. She just recently got her RN license because the position she wanted required her to be a RN, so she went back to school to obtain her RN and she did it on line then went to Tallahassee Fl, to take the test.
The people that go to Glencoe is there for short-term to long-term care depending on what type of care they need. Ms. Harmon stated that her facility house children from age five to hundred and five, from having strokes to paralyze from a chronic disease. She said they had a baby in her facility from head trauma and the baby was there for a short term until it got better. She said the long term patients are the ones that cannot do anything for themselves and their families cannot take care of them so they placed them there and these are the ones that are in comas, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer just to name a few.
Ms. Harmon stated that she has always wanted to work with the elderly, because this is what her grandmother done for a living and she wanted to be just like her and she is the one that raised her and paid for her to go to college for nursing and her grandmother wanted her to be a RN but it took years before she finally took the steps to go back to school to get her RN and if it was not for the job she wanted then she problem would not have her RN license. She said she is up in age and her next step is retiring in about ten more years if everything goes well.
The education requirement for this position is that you have to have a high school diploma, management experience, RN, and experience working with short-term and long-term care patients. Ms. Harmon was a LPN when she applied for the job and she had to return to school to become an RN so she could move into management. She said that she was already doing the job but she didn’t have the title of management so when the open came she applied for the job and in the mean time they told her she had to get her Registered Nurse license. Ms. Harmon became an RN 2012 and took the role of full time management.
I have been in nursing since I turned eighteen and now I am over fifty and for any one that wants to be a nurse the one thing I would recommend is that they go to school and study for Registered Nurse instead of LPN because LPN is on its way out. I would tell them to make sure that this something they really want to do and enjoy helping people, because this job is time consuming and it shows the ugly side of people and we have to be the one who keep a straight face and treat them the way we want to be treated. Ms. Harmon stated that people say that nursing is the easiest job in the world and it is not especially working with children and the elderly. You have to love your job in order for you to be a success at what you do.
The changing in health care is going to help people who need health insurance and the one who already have health insurance get the care they need to have a better life. The health insurance if it has preventive care will help save people who never had health insurance and only seen a physician when they went to the emergency room for service, because some of them do not primary physicians. With the changes going on now will help people live longer lives.
Interacting with others in this environment is like being around family members, we argue, laugh, and work together to get the job done. I really enjoy the ones I work with and the other employees working with us. My favorite is my patients the ones that are able to communicate because they can tell you about things that happen way back when and some just like to talk to you and I really enjoy being with them. People that work under me is like my little sisters and brothers we have birthday parties or just little get together outside of work.
Talking to Ms. Harmon has opened my eyes to nursing. I started out going to school for Registered Nurse twenty-five years ago and had one year left and started clinical and found out that I were pregnant and never returned. I made a promise to my father that I would go back to school and get my degree and it’s not in nursing but still in medical. I told Ms. Harmon about my dreams about having my own business in Medical Coding and Billing and she replied that it is a good field to go into and that I could work from home and there are not many people doing this, she also stated that nursing is not for everyone and some people goes to school for nursing and be unhappy with the decision they made instead of doing something they really want to do, because of the money that is in the nursing field and Ms. Harmon stated that she think that is the wrong reason to get into nursing.

Mrs. Burrell make sure that everything is taken care of on their behalf. Her first main responsibility is determining her patient’s needs. She does this by completing an assessment when the patient first come into the rehab. The individual was interviewed at her kitchen table following a day at work. Mrs. S is a middle aged, slightly overweight white female who appears her stated 56 years of age. She appears to have clean hygiene, neatly and appropriately dressed in khakis and a sweater and is in good general physical health. She was friendly, cooperative and made eye contact throughout interview, spoke with clear, normal rate and tone.
