Obesity

Obesity refers to a person that has an excess proportion of fat which will affect the person in many ways, such as health, social and emotional. A person becomes obese when his or her weight is 20 percent or more above the normal weight according to the age and sex. In today’s world, obesity is very common. One in six adults is obese, one in three of the world’s kids are obese and the rate of overweight people is projected to increase by a further one percent per year for the next ten years in some countries. According to World Obesity Stats, the highest rates of obesity occur in United States and Mexico. Obesity is extremely unhealthy and people need to learn what are the causes, disadvantages, and ways to prevent obesity.
If someone asks, “what are the causes of obesity?” one may answer with no hesitation: “eating too much junk food.” Eating too much junk food is a major factor of obesity, people are eating more than they used to, there are fast food chains everywhere, and many people do not care about how bad the food is for their health as long as the food is delicious. In a single Big Mac sandwich in MacDonald, there are 540 calories and 29 grams of fat which will take a 150 pound man sixty minutes of playing basketball to burn it off. Other than eating junk food, and consuming too much calories, a bad lifestyle is also a major factor. As today’s technology develops, people can save a trip to the mall and buy their desired products on the internet or over the phone. Many teenagers these days choose to play video games instead playing sports or doing activities outside. People are adapting a lazy lifestyle, because technology can do almost everything for them. The less you move around the fewer calories you burn. Physical activity also has an effect on how your hormones work which have an effect on how your body deals with food. Another reason is not having enough sleep. When someone is not having enough sleep, his or her body will produce a hormone called Ghrelin which stimulates appetite. Smokers may become obese when they stop smoking. Smoking reduce the smoker’s appetite, so when they stop smoking, they will more likely to have a larger appetite.
There are many disadvantages of obesity in different areas such as body health, social and sexual. Obesity can cause several health risks such as joint pain, weaken immunity, hearing diseases, heart attacks, stroke, Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure and pregnancy issues. Obesity can also cause social problems. People with obesity are generally looked down upon, made fun of and laughed at. Lots of people make “fat jokes” about obese people. In many cases, obese people suffer through depression because people laugh and make fun of them. Obesity can also cause sexual issues. Obese individual or couple may experience lack of sexual enjoyment, performance or desire.
Obesity is very unhealthy leaving the obese person with lots of disadvantages causing lack of enjoyment of life. Obesity is totally preventable, but it takes patience and endurance. In order to prevent obesity, one must stay active. To be able to stay active one must perform regular exercises, such as joining a gym or a play sports. Doing chores or walking to the stores instead of driving are also good choices for staying active. Food choices are very important. It is very accurate when people say: “you are what you eat”, because if one eats more healthy food than junk food, one will tend to be healthy, but if one eats more junk food, he or she will tend to become obese. According to The Food and Drug Administration, one must consume 2000 calories a day and one must ensure that the intake of food include grain, legume, meat, vegetables, fruits, dairy, and bread items. If one is not physically active, he or she must reduce the intake of calories, or else they may result in obesity. Many people mistake thirst for hunger, so they eat a lot of food, but really, they are just thirsty. Drinking lots of water every day can help flush out toxins and impurities from your system, and one must drink a minimum of eight glasses of water every day. Drinking water is a great way to combat hunger and to lose weight. In order to prevent obesity, one must eat less junk food and drink less soda. Most junk foods contain trans fat, which is a processed fat also known as industrial or synthetic trans fat. Trans fat can increase cholesterol and increase the chance of heart attacks, cardiovascular diseases, and more importantly obesity. Soda companies tend to put a lot of sugar into the sodas to make the taste of their soda sweeter and better. Sugars in soda are not a specific nutrient, so they are metabolized by the body and stored as fat. When one is exercising this reduces the intake of sugar, and it forces the body to use up the stored fat and therefore losing weight. Finally, avoiding stress is also another way to prevent obesity. When someone is stressed, they tend to drink a lot and eat a lot to relieve stress. These unhealthy habits can lead to obesity. Ways to prevent stress are yoga, meditation, or other self awareness techniques to improve temper and self control. Being stress free can give you a positive, better, and a more encouraging feeling which helps prevent obesity.
As one should see, obesity is not good; rather it is very unhealthy and harmful to the human body. The causes of obesity may be stress, excess intake of food and lack of exercise. Obesity can cause several major diseases such as heart attack and cardiovascular diseases. We should all be aware of obesity, and take steps to prevent the circumstances. In order to prevent obesity, you should increase the rate of exercise, eat less junk food, and reduce stress level. Take care of the body God gave it to you and avoid obesity, “Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags.” (Proverbs 23:20-21)
