Health Information Technician
Health Information Technician’s are an important assest to healthcare organizations. An individual who has an interest in becoming a Health Information Technician must meet specific requirements. The eligibility requirements are an Associates Degree in Health Information Technology or a postsecondary certificate from an accredited program by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Health Information Management (CAHIIM). Health Information Technician’s must keep current on their certification such as renewing their certification and taking educational courses as required. Health Information Technician’s are responsible for maintaining the health records of patients in both paper and electronic systems. It is important
for a Health Information Technician to be detailed oriented as they need to be accurate when reviewing a patients record, organized when maintaining data for clinical databases, understand and use appropriate application software to assign codes for reimbursement, and ensure the security of patient’s health information including proper authorization for treatment, confidentiality, and data secrity. Health Information Technician’s need to understand being detailed oriented and accurate is important as they document in patients’ health record which include medical history, symptoms, exams and test results, and any treatments they have had. Health Information Technician’s can work in different positions in a healthcare facility such as a medical coder, or a cancer registrar. (bls.gov) According to the bls.gov, “Health Information Technicians held about 186,300 jobs in 2012”. Majority of Health Information Technician’s can work in a hospital setting or a doctor’s office. Other areas that they can work in are nursing facilities, insurance companies, pharmacies, lawyers offices, and government positons.
