This paper is aimed to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the oral health care system in Nigeria and also investigate the association between maternal mortality, and the delivery of quality health care. Additionally, we will later discuss how undeveloped countries are affected by poor leadership and retrospectively cause regions to suffer socially, economically, and environmentally.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) new data shows that as the death toll in Nigeria is falling, the percentage of deaths that happen in the first month of life is increasing. Newborn deaths now make up 28% of all deaths under five years compared to 24% two years ago. Every year 241,000 babies die in the first month of life in Nigeria making it the African country with the highest newborn death toll, and every 6 out of 10 mothers give birth at home without access to skilled medical care during delivery. (HNN, 2011) This paper is aimed to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the oral health care system in Nigeria and also investigate the association between maternal mortality, and the delivery of quality health care. Nigeria’s health system has made some progress and growth in the oral health care system. However, the resources available are exceptionally scarce and overstressed in many areas. Let’s analyze the World Health Organization (WHO) definition of health system: “all actors, institutions and resources that undertake health actions-where a health action is one where the primary intent is to improve health” (Skolnik, 2012). To better analyze we can begin to narrow the definition down to the actors, in which are under total or partial control of governments, because governments are the primary funders in many cases providers of health care
