Recently there has been revisions to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and schools were required to overhaul their entire menus to provide the students with healthy and nutritious foods including fruits and vegetables. The new school lunch rules are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 which has been implemented this fall. (Post Standard) The Hunger Act allows the USDA the opportunity to make reforms to the school lunch and breakfast programs. With these revisions come strict guidelines from the federal government that each school district must follow in order to receive funding and reimbursement (National School Lunch Program, 2012, August p. 1). In this essay i will be comparing the positive and negative effects of these recent revisions to the NSLP. I will then discuss whether or not these changes are beneficial to the children receiving the meal and whether NSLP is leaving children hungry or helping children make healthy food choices.…

The most obvious change is that a half cup of fruit or vegetables will be served with every lunch. If school districts don’t comply with the new mandates, they won’t be reimbursed by the federal government for their lunch program. The school lunch changes are a responsible response to what health experts call an epidemic. An estimated 23 million children and teens in the U.S. are obese or overweight, a statistic that health and medical experts consider an epidemic. That prevalence puts nearly a third of the country’s kids at early risk of a litany of diseases usually associated with adults with Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stroke.…
One reason that the school boards should improve our school lunches is because kids get to choose want they want for school. According Mary L. Gavin, MD can choose to eat the green beans or throw them out. A kid also can choose to eat an apple instead of an ice cream sandwich. Another reason is Because they serve junk food everyday. According to the School of Thought editors(2012) American school lunches have gotten so bad that some students have even started to boycott their school lunch by bringing a sack lunch to school instead of buying the lunch provided by the school. Most of the students have done this because of the lack of quality and quantity and feel like the National School Lunch Program has changed their school lunches for the worst. The boycotting of school lunches only started with 20 people and has quickly spread to more than 300 students.…
I agree that me, and everybody else that attend this school. Should have a healthier lunch menu. Some individuals are going to have a problem with that. Because we're going to have to get rid of some of our favorite foods. But I think if we all get together and have a school meeting. And talk about how it's going to help and benefit us. Then the people that disagree. Might have a better understanding, and agree on a healthier lunch menu. The main reason why I want to change to a new, healthier school menu. Is because if we have food that is not good for us, and we keep on eating and eating. Most people are going to gain to much weight. Then eventually become obese. Another reason is if we have healthier food. People like me that have…

Tired, crabby, or unfocused in class? It could be the food you are eating. The lack of healthy school lunch selections has recently become a problem in almost every elementary, middle and high school across the nation. There are many good reasons to remove junk food from school lunch menus, and creating a healthier student body is number one. Junk foods should be taken out of school lunch menus because they affect your body and mind in negative ways.…
School lunches are almost always inadequate. More than half the students leave lunch hungry. They give choices of vegetables but when they don't taste good they'll just be trashed. If they eat eight hundred calorie meals and they only eat one fourth they only get two hundred of those calories. That's possibly for a high school student that plays three sports a year that won't be home until after six or seven o'clock.…

School lunches lack healthy nutrients that growing children and teens need. Because, schools lack the proper funding needed to support students with healthy lunches, students have a horrible diet. A lot of people, including myself, believe that if healthy school lunches were provided students at home would make better choices when it came to what snacks they ate between meals. If schools got better funding for healthier lunches it could theoretically save the government more money because the students in turn would have less health problems.…
When it comes to school lunches, many parents do not see how bad they can truly be. When enrolling your child or children into a school, the lunches are not the first thing that you look at. We, the students, line up five days a week to see the never changing and unhealthy menu at the school cafeteria. The lunch ladies give us a choice of Teriyaki Beef or Mandarin Chicken, however, both of them contain the same precooked “meat” which is tasteless, plastic-like and oily. Lunch is an important meal of the day and it is eaten at school. It boosts our metabolism and gives us energy for the rest of the day. But it is probably one of the biggest problems at our school. As stated by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and the Healthy School Lunch Campaign "school foods are too rich in saturated fat and cholesterol" (pcrm.org) which are huge factors of causing obesity and diabetes for kids and teenagers. We are advised to eat healthy to prevent these problems but we cannot always do that with the selection that is provided at Lincoln High School. “94% of students prefers to eat healthy food” (class survey).…
