The heart is the organ that supplies blood and oxygen to all parts of the body. The heart is located in the chest cavity just posterior to the breastbone, between the lungs and superior to the diaphragm. The heart is surrounded by a fluid filled sac called the pericardium. Blood is pumped away from the heart through arteries and returns to the heart through veins.
The heart is divided into two halves. The halves are then divided into chambers. The upper two chambers of the heart are called atria (pl.) /atrium (sing.) and the lower two chambers are called ventricles. These chambers are then split into left and right atrium/ventricle. The atria receive blood returning to the heart from the body and the ventricles pump blood from the heart to the body. Valves allow blood to flow in one direction between the chambers of the heart.

Certain things increase a person's chances of getting cardiovascular/heart disease. Doctors call these things risk factors
Some of these risk factors a person can't do anything about, for instance being older and having other people in the family who have had the same problems. But people do have control over some risk factors such as smoking, having high blood pressure, being overweight, and not exercising can increase the risk of getting cardiovascular disease.
How they can lead to a healthier lifestyle? Eat a balanced diet because too much fat and butter can cause high cholesterol. Maintain a healthy weight because too much fat can clog up your arteries, also the person will have high blood pressure. Exercise regularly to stay healthy and not to get overweight Don’t smoke as it increases risk of heart attacks Limit alcohol use also causes heart problems.

The heart is what some determine to be the most important organ in our bodies and one of the biggest contributors. It is one of the major organs that if we did not have, it would not be possible for us to live. The heart is about the size of a fist and is broken down into four chambers, the aorta, superior vena cava, pulmonary artery, and the coronary artery. The four chambers include the right and left atrium and the right and left ventricle. The heart is responsible for supplying oxygen and blood to the entire body. Blood passes through these four chambers and then exits and pumps into the rest of the body. The heart also has three layers of walls…

The heart is the organ that supplies blood and oxygen to all parts of the body and is connected with the circulatory system. It pumps blood throughout the blood vessel by contractions. The male’s heart weight between 9 and 11 ounces and the female’s heart weighs about 11 to 12 ounces (Bradley, 2013). A person’s blood pressure has major effects on their heart where high blood pressure is a major risk factor for a heart attack. When the heart isn’t receiving enough oxygen a person will develop chest pains, known as angina where the blood flow is blocked, and results in a heart attack (Casey, 2013).…

The myocardium, commonly referred to as the heart, acts as a pump for transporting blood around the body via a collective system, known as the cardiovascular system. This system has various components; blood vessels; mainly arteries, veins and capillaries. The cardiovascular system has four main functions within the body. Firstly to transport dissolved oxygen, hormones, nutrients, salts, enzymes and urea to cells located around various places within the body, whilst at the same time eliminating any waste products such as carbon dioxide and water. Secondly, to protect the body from infection and blood loss. Thirdly, to distribute heat around the body to enable a healthy temperature of 37oc and finally to aid the body to maintain fluid balance. This ‘human pump’ can be regarded as two pumps. The fist sized organ contains two muscular chambers; the upper chamber; the atrium and the lower; the ventricle. The right side of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood from the veins to the lungs for oxygenation, whilst the left side pumps oxygenated blood from the lungs to the body. It is important to note that the two sides are separated by a septum. The blood flows through the heart twice within one cycle, this is known as ‘double circulation’.…

The function of the heart is to pump blood throughout the body. The heart pumps blood containing oxygen from the lungs to body. It passes blood without oxygen back to the lungs for more oxygen. The heart has four chambers; the two upper chambers are called atriums, and the two lower chambers are called ventricles. The left atrium is located above the left ventricle, and they are separate by a valve called the mitral valve. The…

The heart lies in the thoratic cavity, organs associated with the heart are inferiorly, the hearts apex rested on the tendon of the diaphragm, superiorly, the great blood vessels, posteriorly the oesophagus, trachea and the left and right bronchus, laterally, the lungs and anteriorly the sternum and ribs. (Waugh& Grant 2014). The heart provides a constant blood circulation action and the blood vessels provide a network for the blood flow. The heart is the pump responsible for maintaining adequate circulation of oxygenated blood around the vascular network of the body, ( www.le.ac.uk) the right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs (pulmonary circulation) and the left side receives oxygenated blood and supplies it to the rest of the body (systemic circulation). There are three types of blood vessel, arteries, capilleries and veins. Blood is pumped from the heart through the arteries at high pressure which could damage the tissue so it needs to go through the capillaires which are smaller low pressure blood vessels that are responsilbe for providing oxygen to the tissues, they also absord excess carbon dioxide and then deliver the blood into the veins which then supply the blood back to the heart. The heart generates its own electrical impulses, it does not rely on any other external mechanisn to make it beat. A normal heart rate is 60-80 times per minute, factors which can decrease or…

Coronary heart disease: Coronary heart disease is the build-up of plaque such as cholesterol and other fatty substances within the coronary arteries causing a reduced or no supply of oxygen to the heart. The process of plaque lining the coronary arteries is called arteriosclerosis. Coronary heart disease can be caused and triggered by many different factors. These include: Smoking; lifetime smoking roughly doubles your risk of developing heart disease because the chemicals in tobacco get into the bloodstream from the lungs and they damage the blood vessels and other parts of the body. It is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease; High blood pressure; the blood pressure can become dangerous the higher it gets. An increased of blood pressure is an increase of the force of blood against the walls of the arteries and the higher the blood pressure the higher the likelihood the walls of the arteries can become damaged. This can lead to stiffness of the arteries making them less flexible which can lead to the build-up of cholesterol, even after being used on cells the extra gets deposited inside the artery wall lining which can lead to atherosclerosis and this can occur from unhealthy diet intake. Your blood pressure and cholesterol level are also important. All people aged over 40 should have a cardiovascular health risk assessment’ usually available at your GP surgery. If you have a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease, treatment to reduce high blood pressure (hypertension) and/or cholesterol may be advised. Physical activity like exercising helps reduce blood pressure and the…

Risk factors do play a major role in the development of these diseases. All risk factors for COPD and heart disease are similar in nature, and most can be prevented. Here are a few that should be addressed. Smoking is the leading cause of both COPD and heart disease. Cigarettes, along with other tobacco products, contain nicotine. Nicotine has been proven to cause severe damage to the lungs which, in return, causes the levels of oxygen to be limited. Limited oxygen to the lungs will cause COPD. Nicotine can also cause a rise in blood pressure. This rise in blood pressure can cause damage to the heart which can result in heart disease. Quitting smoking is the best prevention of COPD and heart disease. Pollution has also been shown to cause damage to the lungs and hearts of humans. If a patient is living in an area where the pollution level is high, he or she has a greater risk of being diagnosed with COPD and heart disease. Living in an area of high pollutants also poses higher risks of mortality among COPD and heart disease patients. If the population would pay closer attention to these risk factors, and the prevention of these risk factors, maybe then we can see a decrease in the number of patients being diagnosed with, and losing their lives to, COPD and heart disease.…
