United States
• People of all ages and backgrounds can get the condition. • 1 in every 4 deaths.

STROKE
• Stroke is 1 out of every 19 deaths.
• One American dies from stroke every 4 minutes.
• Every year, more than 795,000 people in the United
States have a stroke.
• Stroke costs the United States an estimated $36.5 billion each year.
• Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability.

• Together, heart disease and stroke are among the most widespread and costly health problems facing the
Nation today
• 29.9 percent of adults aged 18 years and older had high blood pressure/hypertension in 2005–08 (age adjusted to the year 2000 standard population)
• 3.5 percent of children and adolescents aged 8 to 17 years had high blood pressure/hypertension in 2005–08
