Analysis of Quotations Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” confers about the evil actions that are still part of the society. These types of actions cannot be determined by the superficial aspects of the individuals. The Heart of the Darkness is a complex story which shows numerous representations throughout the novella. A story is stated by Marlow in a convincing manner where he describes what he observed and felt about the things. He also shares his thoughts about the things in the story, but it still remained moderately ambiguous. For my analysis, I chose the river as it symbolizes the access of Europeans to the African continent. The river mainly permits Europeans, the proper access in the central Africa without passing through forests or land routes. Here in the narrative, it marks the internal spirit of Marlow through his river expedition. Furthermore, Marlow gets to identify himself in his river journey and comprehends that he has many things in mutual with the native people. Also, the river signifies the expulsion of the Europeans from the African continent as the flow of the river makes the navigation more challenging towards central Africa. This journey also demonstrates the harsh situation faced by Marlow when he was traveling to Kurtz. Overall, at the end of his trip, Marlow perceives that Kurtz was a cruel and cold-blooded man. In Conrad’s opinion, she is just as capable of malice as anyone else, as it symbolizes sort of evil because she had black apparel on her. Here Marlow lied because he knew what kind of creature Kurtz had become and he also felt that evil existed universally. Hence, Kurtz’s fiancée denies the fact of an internal evil reality as she was oblivious of the thought that her fiancée was an assassin who decapitated innocent lives. On comparing both Kurtz and his fiancée, Kurtz was on the dark side and his fiancée was on the bright side of their relationship. Therefore; Kurtz in the plot is referred as “Yin” and his fiancée is “Yang” according to the Chinese philosophy. The character of Kurtz changes through different phases as before his job he was principled and innocent but after his job he turned out to be an executioner due to the unsullied
