The 9/11 terrorist attack left many american citizens in a psychological trauma. During President Bush’s speech, he portrayed pathos to convey the effects of this horrifying experience that impacted each and every one of us. In the 9/11 Address to the Nation speech Bush mentioned, “The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge -- huge structures collapsing have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness, and a quiet, unyielding anger,” that revealed a mental image of this horrific…
The analysis of Traditional, Hegemony and Black masculinity the requirement for power is absolute. Power “is not a thing, but a relation.” (michel-foucault.com). Power is created by some entity generating a condition that overpowers another individual or group. The power creation generates different types of power. Sovereign power is the obedience to the law central authority (michel-foucault.com). There is a Sovereign powers display in every visual media piece. The sovereign power displayed in visual media is suppressive to the greater good. The Birth of the Nation film created or captured the narrative that Black men are dangerous. The danger is completely linked power. The power to take is the true concern. All the Black males at one point in time wanted to take something from the central power.…
What makes a hero a hero? In the western movies, The Searchers, High Noon, and Rio Bravo, each film portrays the issue of masculinity in three distinctive ways. In each of these movies the main character is left with defeating the bad guys. In all three of the movies, the main character is able to represent the traditional masculinity, toughness, and honor.…
Gender roles are nothing more than the belief that men and women have different behaviors and characteristics based on their sex. The media is partly responsible in creating this social norm through various forms of media which include television shows, films, and different advertisements. According to a Canadian communication theorist Marshall McLuhan, “mass media not only gives people information and entertainment, it also affects people’s lives by shaping their opinions, attitudes and beliefs” (1964). Although the media uses certain tactics to reinforce the dynamics in American society that men are masculine and women are feminine, the hit television series Southland redefine…
Black masculinity itself is a subject that in the recent years has come under scrutiny for its portrayal of the black male as violent, aggressive and oversexualised and disregarding them as emotional fully realised individuals. Due to the influence of the media in mainstream society these representations have become negative stereotypes attributed to African American men preventing them from truly discovering their identity out of the gaze of white America. With movements such as the Black Lives Matter movement (2013) created in response to the highly publicised killings of African Americans as well as their treatment at the hands of law enforcement ;also the BBDC 'Black Boys Don’t Cry "a project designed to deconstruct the ideals of black…
In the United States, the inequality of many different types of races and genders is very clear. Many people are treated unjustly whether it's from the police, the judicial system, or society itself. A lot of people are prejudiced towards others because of their appearance, skin tone, or who they are and it's a very serious problem. The media that we have today is arguably being used as a tool to make certain groups of people look inferior to others. Many people feel this way because of events that have happened in the last few years across the country from Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown repeatedly being depicted as thugs in the news to racist advertisements in the 1900s. Black masculinity is being manipulated by the media to fit a certain…
Oppression, a word that is commonly used in the social work profession to describe different groups of people who face hardships due to their characteristics. These characteristics include race, gender, and socioeconomic status, which leads to society labeling them as different. The majority of the people who are in these groups make up minority groups. Furthermore, power structure is the overall conflict that prevents these minority groups from advancing. This conflict leads to those who are affected becoming what society perceives them as, in other words, internalizing negative stereotypes given to their group. This analysis will be based on the perspective of incarcerated African American men. This perspective is to describe the barriers…
Manhood in western societies is pre-programmed, pre-packaged and forced-fed to boys from birth to adulthood. Historically the purest example of a real man was the military standard. Military manliness dictates that a man must be strong, both physically and mentally, a man must be unfeeling and must be loyal to their fellow comrades. Military manhood favors the heterosexual man and believes that he should not gay or exhibit feminine behaviors if he is to be considered a real man. Above all else they must protect what is theirs, the bloodier the better. This idolized and ideal expression of masculinity is losing much of its relevance in the ever-changing and evolving modern world but, it will always have a platform in Hip- Hop culture.…
The dominant feminist description for men’s violence towards women is that it is “essential to a system of gender subordination” (MacKinnon, 1989). Feminists argue that sexual violence is a man’s way of preserving male dominance and female subordination, which are fundamental to the patriarchal social order (Stanko 1985). It is argued that a range of sexual violence outlines the everyday lives of women (Kelly, 1988), and similarly Stanko (1985) establishes that the appreciation of physical and sexual security by women is so firmly merged with their concern for sexual integrity as to “render the concept of safety problematic for women” (Stanko, 1985). It is argued that the safety which women do actually have is not used to their advantage and…
Growing up in our society and transforming into various norms, values and beliefs, is revolutionary amongst young men and ladies, and today I will specifically focus on young men. My little brother is 12 years old, he is already expected to “act like a man” or “man up”, and He will be told to show no weakness. This kind of advice will hinder my brother from becoming a “true man”. According to tough guys 2 by Jackson, Katz 86% of armed robberies are committed by men, 77% of aggravated assaults are committed by men, 87% of stalkers are men, 86% of domestic violence incidents resulting in physical injury are perpetrated by men, 99% of rapes are committed by men, Men commit approximately 90% of murder, and over the past 30 years, 61 of the last 62 mass…
I agree that the dominant form of masculinity and femininity are changing, however, this change has been going on for several generations now. Women are becoming the breadwinners while a lot of fathers are becoming stay-at-home dads. Some of the changes that come with women taking on more masculine jobs is the way that they dress. Since many jobs require respect women have gone from wearing dresses and cute hairstyles to wearing pants and cutting their hair off short to appear more dominating. On page 296 in our book the author points out that our society today actually promotes “tough femininity” as a lot of today’s actresses are seen taking on the more masculine…
Lots of people all over the world believe that men are always better at everything. Just not when it comes to staying home, cooking, and cleaning. The problem with this is not enough people support gender equality and it is a very important key to a healthy community. Instead of supporting the situation people just continue to come up with more stereotypes.…
After the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, men began to promote the dominant social position of men, and the subordinate social position of women. This form of hegemonic masculinity that is played by males begins to challenge the presence of masculinity in America. White masculinity evolves through previous periods of historical crises throughout America, thus becoming the resultant of hegemonic masculinity in the United States. The evolution and erosion of privileged masculinity is negotiated and interpreted at the micrological levels of family, home and male psychology. Irén Annus uses the award winning TV series Breaking Bad in order to portray the protagonists’ (Walter White) hegemonic masculinity through the interactions of his…
I am writing about black men in America. Today's black men have a struggle. They are struggling with colored men and stereo-type. The one thing about black men in America is that they are fighters. They won't give up without a fight. They will try to prevail in anything that they want do.…
Hegemonic masculinity refers to the dominant form of masculinity, and is a measure by which men compare themselves and others. However, hegemonic masculinity risks oversimplification of the “situational complexity of contemporary Western societies” (Sobal, 2005: 151). Meanwhile, flexible masculinities “emphasize the negotiation and management of a dynamic and situational process, in which men may select from a variety of models of manhood that may be evaluated, invoked, and enacted” (Sobal, 2005: 151). Men are afforded multiple forms of masculinity that they can invoke depending on the situation, of which cooking is one platform, depending on what form of masculinity they wish to…
