Helen Morot Research Paper

Helen Morot was of Quaker tradition and born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1865. Morot was a champion of social, economic, and labor issues in her time. Greatly influenced by her father, Morot kept him close to her for much of her life, recalling him saying, “I want you to think for yourself – not the way I do.” Keeping this in mind, Helen studied arduously in order to expand her own knowledge and educate herself on the issues of others. In 1897, Helen Morot opened The Library of Economic and Political Science to facilitate others' learning on issues like these. Morot also lead many investigations of unfair treatment in labor jobs. She investigated tailoring trades, as well as treatment of underage workers. Most notably Morot investigated for the Association of Neighborhood Workers in New York City in 1902 to assess conditions for underage workers in the city. This investigation resulted in the city's Child Labor Committee
The creation of many unions in Pennsylvania and New York, as well as her publications on working-class conditions has allowed workers today to educate and stand up for themselves and the conditions they face. Through the formation of unions for representation and support, women have been able to eliminate sweatshop-like conditions. Even today and even in white-collar jobs, women face discrimination, sexism, and a lack of support from male superiors. Helen Morot has helped bring a voice to the voiceless and has allowed women to advocate for themselves and unify against these unjust conditions. As I learned about Helen Morot's efforts to bring issues of inequality in the workplace to light, and to fight for their elimination, I was hopeful that we can continue this work in the United States and worldwide.
