the concept of critical thinking into the text of To kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee, The bluest eye by Toni Morrison. I will also refer to Thinking and Moral Considerations written by Hannah Arendt. In this paper, I am going to argue that the cause of Korean youth problem is lack of critical thinking. This is because of three reasons. Firstly, Korean youth do not have their own opinion about what they learn, because they absorb knowledge without questioning whether it is right or wrong. Secondly, because they do not have opportunities to learn what others think, many of them often do not have consideration for the others. Lastly, because Korean youth do not assume a crucial attitude, they uncritically accept discrimination against them. Finally, I am going to reach conclusion that in order to make Korean youth to think more critically, Korean education system should be changed.
As I have previously said, I believe that the source of Korean youth problem is lack of critical thinking. First reason is that unilateral teaching method does not give Korean youth the opportunity to ask whether what they are learning is truly right. Korean education is one-sided. The teachers do not care whether students are following what he/she is teaching. During the class, the teachers present his/her knowledge and write down important concepts in the black board. The students write down what the teacher states as important, and they just memorize them. As a result, students are significantly influenced by the teacher’s perspective, because they learn and study what the teacher teaches. Students are often discouraged from asking questions, because teachers do not like to be asked questions. To illustrate this point, I would like to talk about my middle school days. When I was young, I had a lot of curiosities and wanted to know everything. Consequently, I asked a lot of questions to the people around me. This did not stop even when I got old enough to go to middle school. During the class time, when I have question, I would raise my hand and ask questions. I did not think my behavior was problematic. However, one day, the teacher told me that she would like it if I did not ask questions during the class. She told me that she did not like me speaking my opinions, because she thought I was being disrespectful of her teaching. After that, I did not ask any questions during the class. This is a problem because students do not have opportunities to be critical of what they learn. They just think what they learn is right and that is how they are supposed see the matters around them. Often, young people become so used learning thoughtlessly that they lose their ability to think on their own.
