Happiness can come from little things that people don’t really think about that could've made an impact in their life emotionally. People all the time don’t ever think about what people had to do to give us…
Sharon Begley in “Happiness: Enough Already” argues that being extremely happy may be a goal of anybody but it also can be “the end of the drive for ever-greater heights of happiness” (455). Begley claims that “being happier is not always better” (455) and an excessive happiness may affect badly to people’s life. She points out that people who reach the highest level of happiness don’t feel motivated to move forward since they are already satisfied. The author goes on insists that happiness does not last long because “negative emotion evolved for a reason” (456). She presents many cases of famous people who experienced negative emotions to create their well-known works showing the need of sadness in every lifetime. Furthermore, people desire to gain more and more happiness causing them the fear to experience sadness. Therefore, what they once considered normal sadness is regarded as a psychiatric illness now. The author then concludes that everything would be much better if “the single-minded pursuit of happiness as an end in itself” (458).…
Being unhappy should be enjoyed by everyone. We must experience a wide range of emotions in order to learn how to handle everything life throws at us. According to Bernard in Brave New World, ‘[he would] rather be unhappy than have the sort of false, lying happiness that he was having here”, (179) this quote means that he would rather be unhappy than live in a happy lie. This book describes a utopian world yet there’s a quote in the book that is in direct conflict with the “utopian” world they are living in.…
What is true happiness? This is an important question that is related to Brave New World, a novel by Aldous Huxley. This book was written right after the first automobile was mass-produced, the Model T Ford. This assembly line production sparked Aldous' mind into thinking if humans were produced in the same way. When Aldous imagined this he thought that the world would be quite different and he decided to write a satire on present day culture. He thought that a world like this would be in a certain state of happiness. The residents of World State A.F. 632 are not truly happy. Instead they live a life of instant gratification, or a fleeting moment of happiness that ends quickly. Also they have no adversities in their life so they are never truly…
A fulfilled life means that you are ready to die because you are satisfied with your accomplishments and your life. However the question is; can you live a fulfilled life in a supposed utopia, if you are restricted and not given the freedom of decision. In the world of The Giver there is perfect balance, but no choices and sameness is strongly enforced. In Harrison Bergeron everyone is equal but those who are beyond others are restrained. In All Summer in a Day everyone lives on an alien planet in space, but are kept isolated underground except for a few hours every seven years. One cannot live a fulfilled life in a perfect world if they are restrained, isolated, and taken away the freedom of decision. You cannot live a fulfilled life…
In the end happiness vs. truth is all make believe, everything everybody believes that is truth is actually not the truth, and everything everybody believed was happiness is not true…
If the only way to obtain happiness is to leave reality, then the happiness is not genuine. In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, the citizens of Huxley’s society frequently consume a hallucinogen, Soma, in order to escape reality and experience happiness. Whenever a problem arises, the government requires its people to take Soma. But even when not on Soma, citizens are conditioned to enjoy everything they do have and dislike what they don’t. So, wouldn’t this mean infinite joy? One flaw is that the government removes the idea of family and prohibits its citizens from getting too close to any one person so that heartbreak and grief cannot occur. But removing family and…
Suffering was not our natural state. Happy was the way we were meant to be.…
The view of life is more of what a person feels rather than what he sees. The spirit of the human holds the ability to have the attitude for someone to accomplish anything in life which could also include someone achieving a goal. Because of that, the view can’t be obtained through communication. Swenson states that the human expression is the key, because through expression man can show value to his existence. If a person asks someone what the view of life is, they can’t relate because they’re talking instead of experiencing so they might not agree with anything the person says. But by experiencing and showing self-worth it provides proof and how life really is. The life of a human with no happiness can be closely be described as “death in life”. All humans naturally want to live a happy life. That is why Swenson believes Christian religion is key, because happiness is so embodied in their believe. Swenson states, “So deeply grounded in human nature is the need for happiness, but ineradicable and imperative. Man is made for happiness; an essentially unhappy man has missed his goal, and has failed to realize his humanity.”(18) By this he is saying that humans crave it so much that Happiness is something that could never be fully…
What is happiness? That is not a question that may be easily answered. Due to the fact that every human-being possesses their own views on life, it is possible that there are innumerable interpretations of what is ultimately this idea seen as happiness. For the purpose of interpreting the idea of happiness as opposed to “being happy” I believe that it is necessary that there be a more continual and perpetual meaning is attached to happiness. I do not believe that actual happiness is a fleeting experience, but instead, a lasting state in which someone finds themselves. When looking to a dictionary or other source of reference to determine an official and concrete meaning behind happiness, the Miriam-Webster…
Introduction: The authentic analogy of the two types of happiness, social, solitary from different aspects. Living ones entire life searching for this magical sensation only to realize there is never satisfaction from finding it. Happiness is a word that has been thrown around for centuries. The term means something different to everyone. To Henry David Thoreau it means not being locked down to the rules of society. To be free from social slaughter of word of mouth. Free from taxes that society is forced to pay and why? Because some big shot said so? Thoreau was a man in a natural world, he knew true happiness, he didn’t care about society and class, never felt alone, he believed in an existence far different than we do, John Muir lived a life like Thoreau, and modern society is not capable of living the way he did.…
I believe these levels of happiness include nothing more but money and material things that people have nowadays. We have lost our way as to what real happiness is truly all about and how to be really happy. Here is an idea, look at the way Americans see happiness and how other countries see happiness.…
Because the uniformity of all people creates stability, the brave new world seems to be perfect. No one needs to live in a state of desire as they should always be able to fulfill their wishes. If they cannot have that satisfaction, they risk feeling disappointed or sad. A horrible fate in this world is to live through periods of desire and fulfillment (Diken 155). The people in this world must maintain feelings of happiness at all times. However, humans are supposed to make the best of the worst situations (Huxley 236). By learning to find peace in times of unimaginable stress, people gain wisdom. Experiencing various emotions are part of the human experience. Thus, people should not be happy all the time. If humans exude monotonous happiness,…
