What is conflict? Why is it good to have a positive attitude during conflict? Why, for so long have humans cruelly mistreated each other if “they are all equal?” Conflict is a fight, battle, or struggle, especially a prolonged struggle (dictionary.com). Anne Frank gives an insight on what life was it was like to not know if you would live for the next day. In Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne is living through the turmoil of all the jewish people as her and her family hid from the Nazi’s. Although the situation she is in is horrifying she manages to stay positive minded. Another story, Dear Miss Breed, a story where all Japanese people in the United States, citizens or not, were placed in internment camps because of the air attack on Pearl Harbor. Miss Breed, a children’s librarian at the San Diego Public Library, gave kids that were put in these camps hope by donating books to them and also by writing letters back and forth to them trying to give them some positivity even in their time of crisis. Both of these stories show that having a positive attitude is the best response to conflict, especially in time of war.…

Gwen Harwood’s, ‘Father and child’, is a two-part poem that tempers a child’s naivety to her matured, grown up attitude. Barn Owl presents a threshold in which the responder is able to witness the initiation of Gwen’s transition. The transformation is achieved through her didactical quest for wisdom, lead by her childhood naivety and is complimented through ‘nightfall’, where we see her fully maturate state. The importance of familial relationship and parental guidance is explored in father and child, as well as the contrasting views on mortality and death. Barn Owl depicts death as a shocking and violent occurrence while the second poem, nightfall, displays that death can be accepted, describing the cyclical and ephemeral nature of life.…

In May 2013, Edward Snowden, a CIA and NSA employee, risked his career and freedom to do something he felt was right; let the world know that the United States had programs such as the interception of telephone metadata, PRISM, XKeyscore, and Tempora internet surveillance programs. This was called the most significant leak in US history by some and sparked up the discussion about the balance between national security and civil liberties. The country needs to strike a balance between national security and civil liberties by sacrificing some of one to give way for more of the other.…

    Barbie doll

Society's idea to be attractive is to be nothing less than ideal. To lack perfection is not acceptable in society. Also society tells people how to dress and act, having people be and look a certain way to be accepted. The desire to be accepted can destroy ones’ self-esteem and many lose sight of their own true beauty. Many will do whatever it takes to not be, say, or do what society thinks is disturbing. Marge Piercy’s poem “Barbie Doll,” written in 1973, is a powerful poem about society’s pressure on a young woman. The name carries a lot of meaning because a Barbie doll has long been an icon in society. Although it is a children’s toy, a Barbie doll demonstrates a woman with a perfect body and pure beauty. The poem portrays a summary of a life since birth to the end of life at a funeral. The main character in the poem never has a chance to live life to the fullest because she is always trying to please others and be accepted, which leads to a life of unhappiness. Piercy uses form, diction, and imagery throughout the poem to help imagine the “perfect” woman in the eye of society and the price one may be willing to pay.…

    Kitty Genovese

The Kitty Genovese story is a tragic one and is a controversial topic when ethics come into play. Though she screamed for help repeatedly while being stabbed the observers from the surrounding apartments did very little to assist the young woman. One observer in specific did shout “Leave the girl alone” and that deterred the assailant for a brief moment but whether or not he acted ethically is something of a different matter. According to Duty-Base Ethics which by definition states “the doctrine that actions are morally correct if they comply with existing obligations owed another and ourselves,” one could deduct that this observer did not act ethically because he did not serve the duty to Kitty Genovese to save her life as if roles were reversed it would be Kitty Genovese’s ethical duty to ensure the observer’s life was saved. This duty that Kitty Genovese did not receive is the very basic fundamental meaning of one’s life and how we each owe it to one another to try to preserve a fellow human beings life. This can also be translated at the Golden Rule which urges us to “do unto others as we would have them do unto us” which is the basis to Immanuel Kant’s ethical reasoning. If the observer had taken the Golden Rule into mind while deciding how to act while this innocent young woman is pleading for help the result could have been a story of heroism instead of tragedy. In order for the Golden Rule to be successful in influencing our ethical behaviors one must place themselves in the situation they are witnessing, contemplate how one would feel in that person’s shoes and struggle and suffering. Obviously this observer was not moved by the Golden Rule and thus did not act ethically according to the Kantian ethical approach.…

    Dancing Bear

Thestory culminates in Dieter 's death due to a stroke. A second significant statement made by Vanderhaeghe (173) thatidentifies the nature of this elderly man is attributed to his housekeeper,Mrs. He is at the mercy of a woman who can decidewhen or even if he will be allowed to eat bacon or to smoke a cigarette. While there is certainly some indication in the story that Dieter needs tobe monitored, Mrs. Hax clearly enjoys her responsibilities and takespleasure in thwarting the old man 's desires. Noting;except the bear was beaten and battered, humiliated, even spat upon"(Vanderhaeghe, 181). He is suggesting that a wild animal feelsor behaves in much the same way that a human does. They are no longer masters of their own fate or destiny. What went on in the oldbastard 's head if anything? Hismouth had opened as if he were about to speak. He has notsucceeded in being embraced by the bear but is embraced by the very womanwho torments him. What is significant about this quotation is that it links the longforgotten dancing bear to Dieter himself. Hax, "It was going to be one of those days. Lear is treated similarly by the daughters he gave the power tocontrol his kingdom. Again, in King Lear, the king is reduced to poverty by his daughtersand is humiliated by them, Nor rain, wind, thunder, fire are my daughters: I tax not you, you elements, with unkindness; I never gave you kingdom, called you children, you owe me no subscription.... Nevertheless, he knows himselfto be worthy of respect, which he does not receive from Mrs. Hax. Similarly, in Shakespeare 's (855) King Lear, his daughter, Goneril, says, "come, sir, I would have you make use of that good wisdom, whereof Iknow you are fraught; and put away these dispositions, that of latetransform you from what you rightly are." Just as Dieter Bethge, theelderly man in "The Dancing Bear" is subject to the domination of a womanwho finds him to be peculiar and difficult, so does Lear find that he hasplaced himself in the hands…
