Henley's Invictus 'And Renegades'
“History doesn’t mean dates and wars and textbooks to me; it means the unconquerable pioneer spirit of man” -Henry Ford. Ford is supporting the theme of being unconquerable and being able to rise above the constraints of society. “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley and “Renegades” by the X Ambassadors, supports this theme as well in many ways. “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley is a poem about being self-governed. “I thank whatever gods may be for my unconquerable soul”(Henley 1). Henley is touching on the fact that he will not be overthrown by the pressures of society. X Ambassadors also touch on this idea in their song “Renegades”. “Running wild and running free,”(Ambassadors 1). This statement means that they will do whatever they please

Through similarities and differences, these two men made choices that deemed them rebellious. They made choices that made them outcasts of society. They led adventures worthy of being told over and over again, through centuries and centuries. And somehow, Chris McCandless and Mahatma Gandhi still, were also very different. Same rebellious ways, but different acts to show that rebellion. Both outcasts of society, but somehow accepted. Adventures worthy of being told over and over, but told in contexts of praise, recklessness, and boldness. Chris McCandless and Mahatma Gandhi lived a journey outside of society, but somehow, their contrasting stories became one inside of…

Henry David Thoreau is one of the most interesting men I have ever encountered in my readings. Thoreau decided to isolate himself from all of civilization, far away from any neighborhood, town, business or governing body. In doing so he wished to discover what mankind could not teach him. In Walden and Civil Disobedience, he recorded his findings.…

“It is my mind which thinks, and the judgment of my mind is the only searchlight that can find the truth. It is my will which chooses, and the choice of my will is the only edict I must respect.” “I ask none to live for me, nor do I live for any others.” These quotes are very similar to the last two line of “Invictus.” They read “I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.” This discovery of individuality is progressive through both pieces of literature and it is not until the end of both pieces that the idea is actually out into words and made crystal clear to the reader. Many metaphors are used in the poem and uncertainty is the clouding theme that keeps Equality from coming out and speaking of his individuality until about three quarters into the…

In society it is socially accepted to be one’s own self. Anthem by Ayn Rand focuses on one’s own individualism and finding their own identity along the way. An expert titled “Don’t Read with Your Eyes” in How To Read Literature Like A Professor by Thomas C. Foster helps illustrate the bigger picture about individualism in Anthem. Therefore individualism is not just being in a state of control but rather finding the deeper meaning of who they are meant to be.…

Nelson Mandela, a past president of South Africa, said, “It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.” Mandela, an activist who spent twenty-seven years in prison, understood the risks a person has to take in order to become an effective leader. Superior leaders selflessly give up many benefits to help other people. They sacrifice time, money, and even personal health. Risking their lives, military leaders skillfully and courageously lead their soldiers through the thick of the battle. In G.A. Henty’s historical fiction book In Freedom’s Cause, William Wallace, a Scottish military leader, bravely defends Scotland from the hands of the English during the Wars of Independence. Of all the characters in In Freedom’s Cause, William Wallace qualifies as a…

A vastly known classic that has captivated many readers in it’s simple message that is expressed complexly is Harper Lee's: To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s simple as it’s a novel against prejudice but shows it through different perspectives. Here it’s the life of a small girl living in the south, 1930’s. Racial tensions are high and Scout, the main character's dad is assigned to handle a black man's case. It’s message is that most people aren’t even aware of the prejudice that they are committing as it’s normal to them and that it’s easier to not provoke them sometimes even if it’s not right.…
