Henri Matisse The Dance Analysis
The piece I selected for the first Art Appreciation assignment was The Dance, painted by Henri Matisse in 1910. From the outset, I was drawn to this abstract piece because of the contrasting simplicity of the content against the vibrant, but dark blue and green colors. The Dance depicts five nude red figures that are holding hands in a cyclical position and appear to be moving in a clockwise direction (ahead). Some of the figures are holding hands in a light and delicate manner, while the figure furthest on left appears to be gripping another figure by the wrist. Curiously, this same figure also appears to be either reaching for, or having just released the hand of the figure on the opposite side. All the figures appear to be on their

The second piece I decided to write a critique on was more of a contemporary ballet work. This piece was called “Water From the Same Source” and it was choreographed by Nicole Hennington. The music for the piece was also actually called “Water From the Same Source” and it was composed by Christian Erik Fredericton, Jason Bingham Noble, and Rachel Blair Grimes. The piece of music was instrumental and the performing artist was Rachel’s. The were four dancers in this piece, two men and two women.…

The art form of dance has been present on this planet for centuries, creating and inspiring people all around the world. Over time, some dance forms have evolved to mould society’s expectation and perspectives, while some have actually grown to question and scare it. Created in a time of change and cultural awakening, Post Modern Dance was seeded by performers in search of a new meaning to dance in a changing world. Since its beginning in the 60/70’s, the style has pushed the boundaries of dance and paved the way for Contemporary and Lyrical. Fauvism started as a loosely associated group of artists who used explosive colors to portray emotion. They were not constrained by the Realists color palette and used this new found freedom to explore and experiment with other styles, helping to cut a path to 20th Century Modernism. Fauvism respected expression on a individual basis. An artists’ emotional response to all things natural, or intuition were far more important than classical training or lofty subjects.…

As a young teenager, I am unfamiliar with Fred Astaire and his work. However, upon watching his famous ceiling dance video, I was quite amazed by his talents. Throughout the video, Fred presented very classy, elegant, and smooth movements that captivated my interest in his style of dance. I honestly don’t know about the quality of dance in the 1950s, but it seems appropriate to say that Fred Astaire’s style of dancing was unique and intriguing, at the least, for his time. What I found to be one of the most compelling features about the video, was of the time period in which the dance was filmed- the 1950s. It seems that the video incorporates a remarkable amount of filming talent and qualities. The fact that, during that time period, the film…

Impressionism started out in Paris around the 1860's, it is often referred to as one of the first modern painting movements. It started in Europe but quickly caught on and spread to the United States. The painting that started the movement was a painting by Claude Monet, Impressionism: Sunrise, this particular piece by Monet, was the first of its kind. This new style of painting allowed the artists to take their work outdoors, this allowed them to create more realistic landscapes and actually experience many of the elements they were trying to portray. Impressionist paintings put an emphasis on the visual sensations and were a more accurate portrait of what the artist was actually seeing and experiencing. Different painting techniques…

When our class visited Joan and Robert Rechnitz Hall I felt as if this would be a hard assignment because I felt as if none of the artwork would catch my attention, seeing as I’ve never had an interest in artwork while growing up. This visit was really eye opening because not only did I enjoy the time we spent there, surprisingly I was actually interested in some of the work that was being displayed at that time.…

Many people play sports in their spare time. Some examples include football, basketball, and golf. But the surprisingly difficult sport of dance is commonly overlooked. Shanna LaFleur once said, “It takes an athlete to dance, but an artist to be a dancer.” Dance expresses strong feelings and emotions through graceful or sharp, powerful movement, revealing to the audience every bit of passion behind it.…

Dance is the reason I exist and as cheesy as it sounds its true. In 1982 my father met my mother at a dance club. He said after watching her dancing with her friends he had to talk to her. Dance has the power to cross boundaries and touch one’s soul. As a form dance can be anything. Rain falling into a pound, an individual tying their shoe, a swan boureeing across a stage or man rolling across a stage can all be dance. Dance is a series of movements stitched together with an intent and frame. Weather the intent is to express emotion, showcase technique, or make a statement it is all dance.…
