Callis worked as a waiter for multiple fraternities and also served as a tutor for other students. During the fall of the 1905 academic year, Dr. Callis was forced to dropout of school due to financial issues. His resilience and dedication on improving himself allowed him to enroll in the University during the 1906 academic year. Upon his return to the University, Dr. Callis was heavily involved in the social club that was started by Charles C. Poindexter. Mr. Poindexter along with Dr. Callis’ sociology professor Mr. Wilcox, were instrumental for Callis’ transition in ideology from Booker T. Washington’s to W. E. B. Du Bois’. Additionally, Mr. C. C. Poindexter spoke often with him trying to garner support among the members for the literary society to stay one as other members of the group began to assert their opposition. Dr. Callis was elected as the secretary of the social study club and also joined Mr. Chapman, Mr. Kelley and Mr. Tandy on the Committee of Initiation. Dr. Callis along with Mr. Jones decided which greek letters to use. Dr. Callis had a hard time coming up with the last letter of the name, so he relied on Mr. Jones knowledge of Greek studies as result of his father being a professor of it at Virginia Union University and his own interest in the
