He told stories of all this historical things he helped to build by operating the crane. He built schools, roads, and much more. In these work cites he met many construction workers. As most people know, construction workers are usually Hispanics. Herbert witnessed how hard working and honest these men were however. They worked like any other person to earn a living for their families. Hebert enjoyed tree jobs the most because it gave him the opportunity to meet more people. If he was not running the crane then he was talking to a new friend. Many times the tree work was for well to-do people in the town. They would pay a pretty penny to have a crane do the job from the street rather than equipment messing up their beautiful yards. In fact, Herbert saw the terrible effect money can have on a person’s mind. Some of these people cared more about their property than the workers on it. This love of money caused them to lose moral and social standards that may have previously existed. Almost everyone loved to sit and listen to Herbert’s tales. Some favorites included his war stories. One must keep in mind that these were stories and there was no differentiating in fact and fiction. He told of how he fought in the World Wars and survived Pearl Harbor. He also managed to survive the sinking of the Titanic. Herbert, according to his stories, played most professional sports but was best at baseball. His famous tales were the ones about the trouble him and his brothers would manage to get into. On their hunting trips they would prank each other and laugh for days at the dumb things they managed to get the other to do. Herbert’s life, though not anything special, left an impact on our society. People that stay in their class and never associate with others from opposite social classes miss out on life. Herbert’s life would not have been as enjoyable if it had not been for his friends from all ways of life. It helped him to put his own life into perspective and determine what is truly
