Herbert Hoover's Response To The Great Depression

The prosperity of the 1920s ended after the great stock market crash of 1929. During this time, families were losing their homes, companies were destroyed and bankrupt, and unemployment skyrocketed (Goldberg, ed. 7, The American Journey, 715). This was a hard time for many and the president at the time, Herbert Hoover, was taking on major blame and criticism from the American people.
Herbert Hoover did not do a great job of cleaning up the mess that the stock market crash caused nor did he listen to the concerns of the American public at that time. The Great Depression brought about hard times for many Americans as they lost their homes and life savings to the stock market crash. People channeled their bitterness towards Hoover and his administration
The democratic hopeful in this election, Franklin D. Roosevelt brought hope to many people with his new ideas for stimulating the economy and getting American back on its feet. A lot of Americans became hopeful that the economy would turn around and that unemployment would decrease if Roosevelt was elected due to the promises he made during his New Deal campaign and his track record of with increase employment in New York (Goldberg, 724). Roosevelt ended up winning the election by a landslide, winning both the electoral and pouplar vote by huge margins (Goldberg, 725).
Overall, the contributions that Herbert Hoover made to society during the time of his presidency were dimisal. Although he served his presidency during a rough time in American history, his own personal and political ideas seemed to be more important to him than listening to the voice of the American people. With a lot of hatred toward Hoover and his administration, Franklin D. Roosevelt was able to easily win the 1932 presidental election and used his New Deal platform to enact programs that would help stimulate the economy
