Since the United States had never had to send troops to fight in Europe, the group of men was at great risk of death. Even though the men were aware of the fact that they would be outnumbered, they agreed to contribute to the war effort to fight for their country. Because the AEF’s campaign was triumphant, they were able to cause great victory for the Allied forces to help defeat Germany. Their efforts can easily be connected to the poems since the group of men who fought in Europe had great pride in the United States. This can be said due to the fact that they put their lives on the line for their country. Furthermore, the AEF suffered some casualties and had to have more American soldiers travel to Europe and fight for the dead. Although not many technological innovations were mentioned in the poems I chose, “In Flanders Fields” had a line saying “scarce heard amid the guns below” (McCrae 5). The “guns” symbolize the many weapons that were used during the war. Not only did McCrae meant to call attention to simple guns, but he also meant to address other deadly weapons such as machine guns, tanks, poison was, and trench warfare.
